CoinGecko denies fake screenshots alleging racist token listing

As a seasoned analyst with years of experience in the crypto space, I must say that the recent incident involving the alleged listing of a racist token on CoinGecko was quite surprising, to say the least. Having closely observed the evolution of the crypto market and its various nuances, I can attest that such instances are not only detrimental to the reputation of the industry but also undermine the core values of inclusivity and diversity that underpin blockchain technology.

CoinGecko has spoken out about false screenshots being shared online, making it clear that no racist token has ever been included in their listings.

In a recent post on November 19th, CoinGecko, the popular cryptocurrency data aggregator, refuted claims that they had listed a digital token bearing a derogatory and offensive name. They labeled screenshots showing such allegations as untrue and potentially misleading.

It’s come to our attention that a bogus image is being shared on social media, implying that we’ve listed a token with an inappropriate and discriminatory name. However, let me set the record straight – this token has never been featured on our platform.

In dispute were some screenshots allegedly depicting a token containing derogatory and unsuitable words within the top animal-themed category of the platform. However, CoinGecko emphasized that the said token was never part of their platform’s listing.

Hello @Coingecko, could you possibly clarify the reasoning behind listing the NiggaButt token in the “Animal-themed” category on CoinGecko? I’m curious if there was any confusion or oversight regarding the token name.

In a statement, the firm urged users to report fake content, highlighting the importance of combating misinformation within the crypto community. CoinGecko emphasized it takes “these allegations seriously and encourage our community to help ensure accurate information is shared.”

It seems that other cryptocurrency price aggregators assessed by crypto.news often include the same questionable tokens in their listings. However, it’s important to note that these listings have not been verified, which has sparked questions regarding the quality and integrity of their listing criteria.

For quite some time now, certain tokens with racist undertones have found their place within the cryptocurrency realm, particularly as meme coins gained traction. This rapid expansion has made it possible for anyone to easily and affordably create their own token.

At the end of May, Vitalik Buterin, one of Ethereum‘s co-creators, spoke out against meme coins associated with dictatorships. He encouraged support for more substantial projects instead. As you might know, Ethereum hosts numerous meme coins such as Shiba Inu and Pepe. However, Buterin expressed concern over the increase of assets that specifically target groups defined by their nationalities. He went so far as to say that some Solana-based memecoins have recently shown open racism.

Additionally, he showed worry about the widespread circulation of coins bearing names linked to authoritarian governments.
