Even though we’re more than two years away from the premiere of “The Batman: Part II,” it seems like just yesterday that the Batman Epic Crime Saga universe expanded with “The Penguin.” This series, available on HBO and streaming for Max subscribers, featured Colin Farrell reprising his role as Oz Cobb, a part he first played in “The Batman.” Farrell’s portrayal received numerous praises, culminating in a Golden Globe win. The show itself was such a hit that there have been discussions about the potential of a “The Penguin” Season 2. However, Farrell has expressed mixed feelings about this possibility, and I share his sentiments.
At the Screen Actors Guild Awards held on Sunday, Colin Farrell won the category for Best Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for “The Penguin.” When asked by Variety about the possibility of a second season, he expressed that while he’s not completely opposed to the idea, he also doesn’t have a strong desire to work on it. In his own words:
– He’s not totally against the concept of another season.
– He doesn’t feel overly enthusiastic about doing another season.
– Another season isn’t something he’s actively seeking, but he’s not entirely opposed to it either.
I’m not interested in it. I don’t want it, not that I don’t not want it. For eight hours, we all left it in the ring. It would be unfortunate if, because of what some people consider a success, I had to do it again. However, it seems that people feel strongly about it being important. But I’m taking my time and have no strong urge to do it. If they come up with something related to Matt Reeves’ cinematic universe that makes sense as a parallel, I’d consider it. But for now, it’s not a priority for me.
More Coverage On The Penguin

Matt Reeves, the director behind The Batman, shares his hopes for potential spin-offs and a second season of The Penguin, expressing a preference for them to occur sooner rather than later.

He’s not entirely off base. Achieving near perfection is quite a challenge. To some extent, it might be an overstatement, but there’s no doubt that “The Penguin” was a critical hit. With a 95% Tomatometer and 88% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes, the show’s critics are scarce, and Cristin Milioti’s portrayal of Sofia Falcone was highly praised, along with other talented performances. Given the exceptional quality of Season 1, why take the risk of making Season 2 unless it can match or even surpass the previous season’s excellence?
Despite the positive feedback, one might contend that “The Penguin” no longer requires a continuation in its narrative. Oz Cobble now possesses the power he yearned for so intensely, having orchestrated Sofia Falcone’s arrest and ultimately her death, murdering his trusted ally Victor, and leaving his mother, Francis, in a comatose state. Such an ending certainly leaves a lasting impression, though it may not be pleasant. While I can’t deny that the prospect of Cristin Milioti’s Sofia escaping Arkham and seeking retribution is intriguing, I wonder if this idea alone warrants the commission of eight additional episodes.
Additionally, it’s been confirmed that Colin Farrell will reappear as Oz Cobb in “The Batman: Part II” on October 1, 2027, so we won’t be saying goodbye to him forever. However, if a captivating concept is developed by skillful writers and guided by a competent director for “The Penguin” Season 2, I might find myself eagerly waiting for each episode to air.
