As a huge fan of Colin Farrell and his transformative acting, I was absolutely blown away by his portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot, AKA The Penguin, in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The extensive prosthetics were a game-changer, and it was hard to recognize the normally handsome Irish actor beneath all that make-up. I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard he was returning to play The Penguin once again, this time in his own standalone series on HBO.
In Matt Reeves’ movie “The Batman”, Colin Farrell took on the role of Oswald Cobblepot, better known as The Penguin. Fans were amazed by the impressive prosthetics that drastically altered Farrell’s appearance, turning him into the infamous crime boss of Gotham City. Now, Farrell is reprising his role as Cobblepot in the upcoming series “The Penguin”, and Mike Marino, the designer responsible for the prosthetics, has shared the sources of inspiration behind this remarkable transformation.
At the latest Comic-Con panel in San Diego for “The Penguin,” I, as the designer, shared some insights on crafting the prosthetic suit. Two key inspirations shaped the design: I took cues from the fictional character Fredo Corleone from “The Godfather” for the menacing aura, and drew parallels with real-life figure Harvey Weinstein for the round silhouette that’s synonymous with The Penguin. Additionally, I delved into bird anatomy to capture the avian essence of the character, seamlessly integrating certain features into the suit. That’s a peek behind the scenes from yours truly!
As I observed injured birds and elderly, weathered penguins, their beaks bearing chips and various signs of wear, I couldn’t help but notice an intriguing detail. On one side of their faces, there was a distinctly curved, scarred feature that seemed to resemble the beak of a bird when viewed in silhouette.
The Penguin’s Costume Embodies His Experience
In the movie “The Batman,” directed by Reeves, Oz Cobblepot, played by Colin Farrell, portrayed a significant DC comic book villain with a secondary role. While Robert Pattinson’s Batman pursued The Riddler (Paul Dano), The Penguin contributed to the storyline through his powerful and influential mob boss position in Gotham. Notably, scenes featuring Farrell, such as an impressive car chase, underscored this established power and connection within the city.
In the upcoming episodes, “The Penguin” delves deeper into his past and his aspiration to control Gotham’s criminal empire, as he encounters Sofia Falcone (played by Cristin Milioti), a merciless figure who is the daughter of crime lord Carmine Falcone. As a long-time inhabitant of Gotham’s underworld, Marino intends to portray this in Oz’s makeup with scars and a broken nose, symbols of the character’s brutal path to power. He commented:
“The beak of this character is damaged on one side, giving it a ragged appearance, suggesting that it has been injured in fights or skirmishes.”
Oswald Cobblepot’s prosthetics may be striking, but they lose impact without an skilled actor to give a chilling and believable portrayal. Fans worried when Farrell was assigned the part, but he breathed life into The Penguin in “The Batman,” owning every scene with his captivating performance. Marino concurs, acknowledging that it’s Farrell’s acting ability and charm that effectively bring his VFX to life.
“Colin’s charm shines through, making him an appealing gangster figure in Matt Reeves’ gritty world. Translating this captivating persona into a comic book is an exciting opportunity for me.”
Following the storyline of “The Batman,” this autumn on HBO will introduce “The Penguin,” a eight-episode series led by Lauren LeFranc from “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” The star-studded cast includes Colin Farrell, Kirsten Milioti, Clancy Brown, Mark Strong, and Rhenzy Feliz. While there’s no official confirmation yet, Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne may make a guest appearance in the new series.
