As a die-hard fan of Batman and its dark, gritty universe, I must admit that my initial reaction to hearing about “The Penguin” HBO series without Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight was a tad disappointing. However, after reflecting on Lauren LeFranc’s words and Matt Reeves’ concession, I’ve come to realize that this new take on Gotham’s underbelly might just be the fresh perspective we need.
Although the Bat-Signal could potentially illuminate Gotham’s gloomy skies as of September, Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of the Dark Knight won’t be seen in action on-screen. Regrettably, Matt Reeves’ The Batman character won’t join the fight against Oz (Colin Farrell) in the HBO Original series, The Penguin. In a recent conversation with SFX magazine (as reported by GamesRadar+), showrunner and writer Lauren LeFranc discussed the challenge of excluding such a renowned figure from his own realm. LeFranc expressed this by saying that it was an interesting process to create a world without the iconic character.
“I get why folks might want Batman in a series or movie, as they feel it lacks impact without him. For me, however, Nolan’s films offer a unique angle. Instead of being on the ground level with the city, you’re looking down from above through Batman’s viewpoint.
As a die-hard movie buff, I couldn’t help but chime in during that recent chat, and LeFranc – known for his work on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Chuck, and Hemlock Grove – had some intriguing insights to share. Here’s a brief summary:
With Oz, you find yourself amidst the bustling urban landscape, where dirt, grime, and hardship are a part of daily life. He yearns to ascend, to fight his way towards success. Thus, it offers a distinct perspective. I believe Gotham City is intriguing enough to warrant further exploration, allowing us to peer through new windows and discover what lies beyond them.
Matt Reeves Does Concede ‘Spectre of Batman Is There’
The creator, Lauren LeFranc, has hinted that the show The Penguin will have a strong resemblance to the movie Scarface from 1983. However, unlike in the original story, there won’t be a Batman character present to counteract Oz (Farrell). Despite the absence of Batman, Executive Producer Matt Reeves acknowledges that the HBO Original series still carries many echoes of the detective world of Gotham’s Dark Knight. During the same interview, Reeves noted:
1. “I don’t think anything essential is lacking.” Instead, “it seems like a continuation of what’s already established.”
When “The Batman” came to a close in the springtime, I, as one of its stars (Colin Farrell), shared with the fans that our upcoming spin-off series, “The Penguin“, would be a gritty and brutally violent take on the original: “It’s gloomy,” I explained. “That’s all I can share about it. It’s very dark, intense, and heavy, I believe. At least that was my experience. But don’t let that fool you – I had a fantastic time working on it. I truly enjoyed every moment.”
Despite Robert Pattinson’s absence, Oswald has solidly established himself within the realm of the Dark Knight. As Farrell explained, this story follows Oswald’s struggle to ascend despite immense challenges, and it’s incredibly grim.
LeFranc’s eight-part series titled “The Penguin” will make its debut on Thursday, September 19 at 9 p.m. EDT. You can catch it every week on HBO. Here is the official trailer for your viewing pleasure:
