As a seasoned gamer of life, I can’t help but feel a tad frustrated when it comes to the drawn-out release schedules of some TV series. Two years? That’s longer than my last MMO subscription! But then again, I’ve learned to appreciate quality over quantity. And from Colman Domingo‘s words, it seems that Euphoria is indeed a masterpiece in the making.
For quite some time now, it seems that TV series are frequently taking more than two years to air new seasons. With the 2024 schedule packed with titles like House of the Dragon and Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, many have delayed their return due to large-scale production requirements. However, the wait for Euphoria Season 3 may break records as it’s been over two years since its last season concluded and no signs of production for the next have emerged yet.
Colman Domingo portrays Ali Muhammad, Rue’s Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor in ‘Euphoria’. Before reprising his character alongside the principal cast, he shared some insights on why each new season seems to take a while to be released:
It seems people are eagerly curious about the TV series Euphoria, yet in truth, we don’t really know much about it, as there has been a lot of buzz surrounding it. I believe this hype is due to its relevance at the moment, but in essence, it feels like the cast and creators are close-knit, bonding deeply. They are giving Sam, the scriptwriter, ample time to pen the stories he wants to tell effectively. Each episode of Euphoria takes roughly a month to film, which is unusual because of the numerous scenes, camera angles, and other production aspects involved – making it quite an intricate masterpiece that likely requires such extensive time for its creation.
It’s been more than two years since “Euphoria” was released, leading some fans to speculate about potential behind-the-scenes dramas delaying production. There are whispers that Zendaya, who is also an executive producer, wasn’t content with initial ideas for Season 3 and proposed a different direction. Previous issues have arisen as well, such as Barbie Ferreira deciding to step away from Season 3 because she didn’t want to continue portraying the stereotype of the “fat best friend.”
From Colman Domingo’s perspective, the reason Euphoria takes a considerable amount of time is due to the extensive work and attention that goes into creating each episode, which is indeed time-consuming. He often mentions that it can take up to a month to film an individual episode, and he considers it a remarkable piece of television artistry.
Apart from the main points, there are other aspects worth considering as well. For instance, Angus Cloud, a star in the show Euphoria, tragically passed away at just 25 years old last summer, leaving his fellow cast members and producers deeply affected. Furthermore, creator Sam Levinson experienced professional challenges when his series The Idol underwent several reported alterations and complications off-camera. It’s impressive that the creators of Euphoria are taking their time to handle the show’s sensitive subjects carefully, rather than rushing the process.
Regarding Ali’s role in the series, there is no specific information about his storyline beyond the fact that a five-year time leap is anticipated. During an interview on Radio Andy, Colman Domingo did mention one wish he has for the show.
I’d prefer if my character could engage in intimate relationships this season, as it seems fitting given the romantic entanglements many youths experience.
As a devoted fan, I’m eager to delve deeper into Ali’s life, as he’s primarily been portrayed in connection with Rue’s addiction so far. Excitingly, Domingo is set to commence filming alongside the rest of the cast come January 2025. Given this timeline, it looks like we won’t get a glimpse of the new season until 2026.
