Comic-Con Surprise: Marvel Screens ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ for Fans

As a dedicated fan of both Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, I can only imagine the sheer excitement I would have felt being part of that historic moment at San Diego Comic-Con. The anticipation leading up to Marvel’s secret screening of Deadpool & Wolverine would have been electrifying, especially after hearing stories of the coveted popcorn buckets and the exclusive lottery system for tickets.

At the San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Shawn Levy (director), and Kevin Feige (Marvel Studios head) delivered an unexpected twist during the Deadpool & Wolverine panel. Instead of just discussing the upcoming film, they surprised the audience with a secret screening of the new movie itself.

“Jackman, along with his co-star Emma Corrin who portrays the antagonist in our global movie tour, excitedly announced, ‘This is the best part yet! It’s happening right here and now.'”

At the vast Hall H, where devoted fans often camp out to secure a spot, the screening of “Deadpool & Wolverine” took place in an unexpected turn of events. Normally, early birds get to stay and claim prime seats for major panels. However, Marvel surprised everyone by emptying out Hall H prior, replacing it with a lottery system for ticket distribution. The fortunate winners not only gained access to the movie but also received coveted raunchy popcorn buckets. Even Deadpool’s creator, Rob Liefeld, made an appearance to sign these special souvenirs for fans.

At Comic-Con SDCC, approximately 6500 avid fans in Hall H have been given the exclusive Wolverine popcorn buckets before Marvel’s DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE panel, causing a surge in demand for Robert Liefeld to sign them.

Tonight, “Deadpool & Wolverine” hits theaters nationwide, and industry experts predict it will secure the largest R-rated opening weekend box office record, potentially earning between $160 and $175 million in North America.

At Comic-Con, this film holds historical significance for the audience. In 2015, Reynolds shared the initial footage of Deadpool in Hall H. The crowd’s response, chanting “one more time” for another look at the trailer, was incredibly rewarding for him. Later on, Jackman entertained everyone with his account of events from behind the scenes. He jokingly admitted to having persuaded people to show it again.

Jackman surprisingly appeared in a new X-Men film alongside his former co-star, despite his earlier announcement that he would retire from the role of Wolverine after the 2017 release “Logan.” This unexpected collaboration came about due to Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019.

During the start of the selection process, Reynolds, Jackman, and Levy exclaimed the film’s rallying cry as they departed the stage: “Let’s get going!” or “Let’s do this!”

After the film ended and we all gathered on stage again, I couldn’t hide my excitement. The screening had left me feeling more certain than ever about the magic of communal storytelling. I declared it as the most memorable movie experience of my life.

Previously at SDCC2024, Kevin Feige described the Hall H surprise screening as “the most extraordinary movie experience I’ve ever had.” Ryan Reynolds expressed it as “an encounter that altered my genetic makeup.”
