Companion

The science fiction horror movie titled “Companion” has been released, and it’s receiving rave reviews for its first feature film by Drew Hancock. Critics have praised the movie, awarding it a 95% “certified fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while users on Popcornmeter are equally impressed with an impressive 94%. Written and directed by Drew Hancock, “Companion” tells the story of a group of friends who go on a weekend trip to a secluded mansion owned by a billionaire. Iris, Josh’s new girlfriend, feels uneasy among the group, but things take a turn for the worse when the host, Sergey, assaults her. In shock and covered in blood, Iris discovers that she can be shut down at any time by Josh – a surprising revelation.

In a surprising twist, contrary to typical sci-fi expectations, Iris isn’t just another companion robot. Instead, it breaks free from traditional storylines and formulas, as confirmed by Zach Cregger, a producer who has also worked on ‘Barbarian’. This unconventional approach has left audiences captivated. Rotten Tomatoes user William W describes it as “a clever blend of dark comedy and thriller,” while Thomas Patrick simply raves, “A rollercoaster ride filled with unexpected turns! The standout film of 2025!

Kareem S proposes an exciting approach: “Give it a try without knowing the plot for the ultimate viewing enjoyment. It’s a thrilling ride with great pacing, though it leans more towards thriller than horror. The twist is intriguing, and I believe this film offers more repeat viewings than something like ‘Barbarian’ (2022).”

As for Ricco, he expresses his belief that ‘Companion’ will gain a devoted following: “It’s darkly humorous, clever, and brave! This film is destined to become a cult classic. If you’re seeking entertainment and think your ticket should be worthwhile, don’t hesitate – watch Companion. You won’t be let down!!!

A Superior Entry in the AI Horror Subgenre

In the spotlight are actors including Sophie Thatcher (“Yellowjackets”), Jack Quaid (“Scream”, “The Boys”), Harvey Guillén (“What We Do in the Shadows”), Lukas Gage (“Smile 2”), Megan Suri (“Never Have I Ever”), and Rupert Friend (“Homeland”). Over the past decade, this cast has been part of a family that has significantly expanded.

Recent years have seen the emergence of films like “M3GAN”, “Child’s Play”, the revitalized “Chucky” series, and the thought-provoking “Ex Machina”. These productions delve into an age-old concept: killer robots. As artificial intelligence increasingly intertwines with our daily lives, it is expected that the AI horror genre will continue to gain strength. This genre offers a platform to examine the risks of relying on machines for decision-making and functions that should be human-exclusive, as well as the potential dangers inherent in trusting such technology.

In the realm of horror, I can’t help but be captivated by the recent releases, and it seems I’m not alone. To my delight, I’ve found myself drawn to a film titled ‘Companion‘, which has garnered quite a following. Interestingly enough, our very own Julian Roman from MovieWeb has dubbed it as “The First Great Film of 2025”, a title that certainly piques my curiosity!

The movie “Barbarian” keeps you hooked throughout, offering an unexpected story that steers clear of common cliches found in many films. Although the setting in a cabin in the woods is typical, the events that unfold are anything but ordinary. The creators of this film, Hancock and the production team, have managed to avoid making simple mistakes or taking the easy route. It’s a delight to witness a movie with a low budget that treats its theme with respect and precision. I found just one significant issue in the script’s logic, but it’s certainly not enough to ruin the overall experience.
