‘Companion’ Filmmaker Drew Hancock Boards ‘My Wife and I Bought a Ranch’ For Amazon MGM (Exclusive)

As a horror enthusiast with a soft spot for rising talents, I can’t help but feel a thrill of anticipation when it comes to Drew Hancock. His journey from writing for TV shows like “Suburgatory” and creating “My Dead Ex” to making a splash with the critically acclaimed script for “Companion” is nothing short of inspiring.

Draw Hancock, who’s creating quite the stir with his first directorial effort, “Companion,” set to hit screens soon, has been signed on to pen and direct “My Wife and I Bought a Ranch,” an eerie supernatural horror film currently being developed at Amazon MGM Studios.

This project brings together influential figures in the horror genre for production. Among the producers are 21 Laps, led by Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and Dan Levine, as well as James Wan and Michael Clear’s Atomic Monster. Additionally, Scott Glassgold from Ground Control is also involved in production, with this year’s unexpected hit “Tarot” being one of their previous works.

The newly settled couple finds themselves in their ideal home in Idaho, unaware that an evil entity has taken residence in their surrounding valley.

The story is derived from a short tale by Matt Query, initially shared on Reddit and subsequently developed into a novel in collaboration with his brother Harrison, under the title “Old Country” by Grand Central Publishing. Matt Query is recognized for another horror novel titled “Wilderness Reform,” which he co-authored with his brother as well, and an adaptation of which is currently in the works at Paramount. Earlier, the adaptation of “Ranch” was slated for Netflix, but it now has a fresh momentum since Amazon and Hancock have entered the scene.

Hancock was a television writer, known for his work on series like ABC’s “Suburgatory” and for developing the romantic-comedy with supernatural elements titled “My Dead Ex,” which was produced by Awesomeness.

However, he created a significant impact when he penned “Companion,” a screenplay blending science fiction and horror elements. This work attracted the notice of Zack Cregger, Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz from BoulderLight Pictures and Vertigo, as well as Roy Lee, who are known for producing the cult horror sensation “Barbarian.

The project captivated New Line Cinema, who not only secured it in January 2023 but also expedited it for Hancock to direct. This movie, featuring Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid, has left those who’ve previewed it before its scheduled release on Jan. 10, 2025, buzzing with excitement about how action-packed it is.
