Conan O’Brien’s Parents Die Three Days Apart From One Another

As a gamer who grew up with Conan O’Brien’s witty humor gracing my late-night hours, hearing about the passing of his parents, Thomas and Ruth, leaves me with a peculiar sense of loss. I never knew them personally, but their stories of academic excellence, professional success, and shared love resonate deeply with me, as if they were characters in one of my favorite role-playing games – each with unique skills, quests, and an endearing bond that transcended the digital screen.

Conan O’Brien’s parents, Thomas O’Brien (age 95) and Ruth Reardon O’Brien (age 92), passed away just three days apart.

Thomas passed away on a Monday, as his health was deteriorating, The Boston Globe stated. On Thursday, Ruth passed away at her residence in Brookline, Massachusetts, as per an obituary distributed by Bell-O’Dea Funeral Home.

Thomas was born on the 28th of January, 1929, in Worcester, Massachusetts. He later graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1954, receiving his degree with honors and a full scholarship.

Over a career lasting over six decades, Thomas was primarily recognized for his groundbreaking work in antimicrobial drug resistance studies. Initially, he led the infectious diseases division at an institution now known as Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Additionally, he held the position of Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School.

Ruth was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on December 16, 1931. Later, she became one of just four women to graduate from Yale Law School in 1957, and even served as vice president of the school’s student government.

Ruth spent time early in her career working as a law clerk for Chief Justice Raymond Wilkins of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court from 1956-57. Afterward, she worked as an attorney specializing in real estate at the Ropes & Gray law firm in Boston. In 1978, she was appointed partner at this firm, making her the second woman to achieve that title there.

Thomas and Ruth got married in 1958, having first met through her siblings. They raised a family of six children, one of whom was named Conan.

The previous host of late-night talks shared with The Boston Globe that his father was frequently the most amusing person present. He further explained, “Whenever he laughed, his entire body would shake, and he’d nearly embrace himself.

Conan mentioned that his father had an insatiable curiosity for concepts, individuals, and the unusual and humorous aspects of existence. He yearned to explore every corner, encounter everyone, witness everything, experience everything.

Besides Conan, they have sons named Justin, Neal, and Luke, daughters named Kate and Jane, and nine grandkids who survive them too.
