Confusion reigns as report of an A24 Elden Ring movie emerges, disappears, and emerges again

Hoo, boy. Alright, let’s see here.

Yesterday, a typical Tuesday took an unexpected turn for Elden Ring enthusiasts and certain internet communities when Nexus Point News, an entertainment news platform, announced that Alex Garland, known for directing movies like Annihilation and Civil War, is reportedly going to helm the adaptation of Elden Ring into a film for production company A24.

It’s hardly surprising that the tale appeared unusual; after all, Nexus Point News isn’t commonly recognized as a popular source for entertainment news. However, what made it stand out was that less than an hour after its release, Nexus Point News chose to withdraw the article.

The tale, accessible via the Wayback Machine, hinted at Elden Ring being Director Garland’s upcoming movie project, with production slated to start in the year 2026.

Initially posted on ResetEra within a thread that has since been closed, the tale quickly sparked reactions of surprise and bewilderment. Subsequently, a tweet from influential gaming news and deal aggregator Wario64, with over 1.1 million followers, amplified its visibility to an extent similar to a puzzled centrifuge’s force. Despite that tweet being removed, it was as if a loud flashbang went off simultaneously in many minds: Should we investigate this further, or decide collectively that it was merely an unusual dream?

On our end, we attempted to get a statement from A24 but did not receive any formal reply. Similarly, we reached out to Nexus Point, and they mentioned that they were unable to provide comments regarding this matter at the present time.

As events unfolded, we additionally contacted a Bandai Namco Public Relations officer who responded with “Landing this was quite enjoyable following my PAX journey!” without providing any clear confirmation. This response neither affirmed nor denied the matter, instead leaving us intrigued as to what might happen next! I believe so, don’t you?

This morning saw an unexpected twist as Alex Garland is reportedly being considered for the director’s chair of Elden Ring at A24, according to Jeff Sneider, who characterizes himself as a rule-breaking figure in Hollywood and has a somewhat inconsistent track record with entertainment industry leaks.

What does this mean for us then? As per 80 Level, Nexus Point could potentially be more trustworthy than it appears to be. Back in September, Nexus Point was the first to announce that Luca Guadagnino and Justin Kuritzkes were involved in the now-scrapped Sgt. Rock adaptation. Since Guadagnino had previously directed A24’s film “Call Me By Your Name,” it’s plausible that Nexus Point could have a connection to someone within the studio, but at this juncture, we’re merely building assumptions on assumptions.

It’s important to mention that Garland openly admits to being an avid Elden Ring player. In fact, just last month during a Reddit AMA for A24’s upcoming film Warfare, he shared that he was playing Elden Ring at NG+6 level, which is quite intimidating to say the least. If A24 were indeed considering an Elden Ring movie, Garland would seem like an ideal director for the project. Notably, this wouldn’t be A24’s first venture into adapting a video game setting, as they’ve already announced their partnership with Kojima Productions for a Death Stranding adaptation, set to release in 2023.

Still, without an official confirmation, let’s continue to take things with a grain of salt. It’s intriguing to ponder, though: What could the storyline of an Elden Ring movie entail when much of its narrative is conveyed through item descriptions? Perhaps a prequel centered around Marika or a historical documentary-style film about the war between Radahn and Malenia. A biopic on Boc might also be engaging. That’d be fascinating!
