According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, the contentious Irish hip-hop collective Kneecap have separated from their booking agency, Independent Artist Group.
I can’t fully comprehend what events triggered the separation of my favorite band from their management, which occurred during the gap between the first and second weekends at Coachella. The band Kneecap encountered a substantial wave of criticism from Jewish music industry figures and organizations following their declaration “Fuck Israel, free Palestine” during their Coachella performance over the weekend. After their set during weekend one, Kneecap asserted that Coachella had edited out their pro-Palestine messages from the festival’s official livestream. (Although their weekend two performance wasn’t live-streamed, pictures of their onstage projections were widely shared across social media platforms.)
A spokesperson from IAG, who manages artists like Billy Joel, Metallica, and Mary J. Blige, confirmed that Kneecap is no longer part of their roster. However, they did not offer any additional information about the reason or circumstances behind this change. When approached for comment, Kneecap’s management was unresponsive at first. The band has a packed tour schedule in the coming months, with performances scheduled at significant festivals like Primavera Sound in Spain and Glastonbury in England, both taking place in June.
Since the band has a vacancy for their representation, the issue arises: who will take on this role, or if they might encounter difficulties finding a new agency. This is due to the strong criticism from groups like Creative Community for Peace, who find it inappropriate that Coachella’s organizers, AEG and Goldenvoice, have supported them at a time when antisemitism levels are at an all-time high. The band’s detractors reference comments made by Kneecap at their concerts, which express support for Hamas and Hezbollah, both of which the U.S. categorizes as foreign terrorist organizations.
On Wednesday, Kneecap’s Mo Chara defended their stance in response to criticism from Rolling Stone, stating that their intent was to highlight the disturbing actions of the Israeli government, not the everyday people.
Chara stated that it’s our responsibility to leverage our platform to address the Palestinian issue, and speaking up about it at Coachella was crucial because the U.S. is a significant contributor of weapons to Israel, which many believe is responsible for acts of genocide in Gaza.
