As a gamer who has been following the world of TV for quite some time now, I must say that the upcoming reunion of Cote de Pablo and Michael Weatherly in NCIS: Tony & Ziva is like a long-awaited level-up in my favorite show. Their on-screen chemistry and the ‘will they, won’t they’ dynamic have been missed by many fans for over a decade.
Following Caitlin Todd’s death in the final episode of NCIS‘s second season, Ziva David assumed her role on the team. This was after Ziva had killed her half-brother, recurring adversary Ari Haswari. Cote de Pablo portrayed Ziva for eight seasons as a regular cast member on the hit CBS series. During this time, Ziva and Michael Weatherly’s character, Tony DiNozzo, developed a ‘will they, won’t they’ dynamic. After over a decade apart, these two characters are set to reunite onscreen in the upcoming spinoff NCIS: Tony & Ziva. However, their reunion extends beyond just actors sharing a screen for a Paramount+ exclusive series. De Pablo revealed that during the making of Tony & Ziva, Weatherly has been an exceptional help to her, making their on-screen comeback even more exciting.
In a joint appearance, De Pablo and Weatherly host the show “Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch.” During their conversation with Leon Vance actor Rocky Carroll, they discussed how the actress enjoys returning to the world of NCIS. When asked how she feels about revisiting this universe by friends, she replied enthusiastically that it’s going to be a lot of fun because she gets to delve back into an old character she holds dear. She added:
I remember saying one thing, which I really, truly mean. I said, ‘Look, I may have good days, I may have bad days… but I have Michael.’ And they were like, ‘Yeah, but you worked with him for like eight years.’ And I said, ‘Yes, but we’ve grown up and we’re older and we have a different appreciation of life and the world and the work itself.’ And I said, ‘I have Michael, and that, to me, is my greatest asset.
Previously departing characters Tony (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva (Cote de Pablo) from NCIS will reunite in a spinoff series, marking their first joint appearance since Ziva’s exit during NCIS Season 11 and Tony’s brief return for the tribute episode of Season 21. While Ziva made sporadic appearances later on, such as in the Season 16 finale and several episodes of Season 17, this is their first collaboration since they were part of the main cast together on NCIS.
Time has brought about numerous changes, yet seeing Tony and Ziva working together once more brings a sense of nostalgia. However, their approaches to this project may differ due to personal and professional evolutions. This is why de Pablo finds it reassuring to seek support from Weatherly when needed, and they even discuss challenges openly. I’m delighted that they have such a strong bond. In her own words:
On certain days, I might find myself in a fragile state or burdened by something heavy… I don’t intend to place the entire weight on Michael, but I feel more comfortable expressing this vulnerability to you. Earlier, I may have kept such feelings hidden for fear of appearing strong and carrying on as usual. Now, however, I believe I could handle things differently and simply say, ‘Hey, I’m struggling today,’ letting the situation be as it is.
For the past few months, Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo have been filming “NCIS: Tony & Ziva” in Budapest. Not long ago, Weatherly posted a picture on social media showing him and showrunner John McNamara working on set with camels nearby. The spinoff will focus on Tony and Ziva having to flee across Europe after Tony’s security firm is targeted by an attack. Joining Weatherly and de Pablo in the cast are Isla Gie, Amita Suman, Maximilian Osinski, Nassima Benchicou, Julian Ovenden, Terence Maynard, Lara Rossi, and James D’Arcy.
The NCIS spin-off featuring Tony and Ziva hasn’t been given a specific release date as of now, but it’s likely that it will debut on Paramount+ sometime in 2025. In the meantime, NCIS Season 22 and the prequel series NCIS: Origins will air on October 14, 2024, while we can also look forward to the return of NCIS: Sydney for its second season.
