Could James McAvoy Return As Professor X In The MCU? Here’s His Honest Thoughts

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant world of superheroes and their epic battles, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when it comes to the X-Men movies. The characters have been a part of my life since I was just a kid, growing up with the original cast and then embracing the rebooted versions. James McAvoy‘s portrayal of Professor X is one that I hold near and dear to my heart, having watched him evolve from a young, inexperienced leader to a powerful force in the fight against evil.

Prior to it being frequent for shared universes and comic book adaptations, there were the X-Men films. Over time, fans witnessed two distinct groups of actors portray cherished mutants, eventually intersecting with Days of Future Past (available on Disney+). James McAvoy portrayed a younger Professor X across four films, and more recently spoke candidly about possibly reprising his role in an upcoming Marvel production.

Supporters who have followed the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) chronologically for years have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of the X-Men. With the introduction of the multiverse and appearances by original actors as Deadpool and Wolverine, it appears that almost anyone could reprise their superhero roles. In an interview with BuzzFeed UK about his upcoming horror film “Speak No Evil,” the interviewee expressed doubt that any actor could convincingly portray characters like Mr. Tumnus or Professor X once again. He candidly addressed this idea and stated:

Indeed, it seems quite gracious. However, considering the upcoming portrayals of Mr. Tumnus from Narnia and Charles Xavier from the X-Men, I suspect different actors might step into these iconic roles.

Here it is. Even though James McAvoy has portrayed Charles Xavier for years, it seems he believes another actor may step into the role at some point in the future. We can only speculate what Kevin Feige and his team have planned for the X-Men once they assume a prominent position within the shared universe.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve been eagerly pondering about mutants and their role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since Disney took over 20th Century Fox. This move hinted at the possibility of X-Men joining the party, but so far, we haven’t seen them assembled in live-action. However, they made a grand comeback in the animated series “X-Men ’97”.

So far, the X-Men haven’t made an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but characters from their comics have been gradually introduced over the past few years. For example, Patrick Stewart reprised his role as Professor Xavier in Doctor Strange 2, and it was confirmed in the finale of Ms. Marvel that she is a mutant. More recently, the credits scene of The Marvels brought back Kelsey Grammer’s Beast character and introduced Binary. It looks like the shared universe is setting up for the introduction of the X-Men team, but we don’t know exactly when they will come together yet.

If a different actor is cast as Professor X, they’ll find themselves following in some impressive footsteps. Both Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy delivered outstanding performances as the telepathic mutant, and it was exciting to witness their shared scene in Days of Future Past. We’ll simply have to remain hopeful for updates from the studio.

With a Disney+ subscription, you can stream the X-Men films. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the release dates for the upcoming 2025 movies as well.
