As a long-time Star Trek fan and avid gamer, I was absolutely thrilled when I heard that Wesley Crusher, one of my favorite characters from The Next Generation, would be making a return in Star Trek: Prodigy. The thought of his voiceover performance in this new animated series made me emotional, reminding me of the nostalgia and excitement I felt as a child watching TNG with my family.
The new “Star Trek: Prodigy” animated series brought Wesley Crusher the long-awaited narrative and gave Wil Wheaton the chance to voice act, which was an emotional experience for us all. Fans are excited about the possibility of more Wesley, perhaps through a new “Trek” spinoff. But is this wish realistic? Wil Wheaton shares his perspective.
Based on Wil Wheaton’s involvement in the Star Trek community and his access to insider information, he may have some insight into the possibility of a Wesley Crusher spinoff. However, it’s important to note that Star Trek tends to focus on Starfleet characters, with “Prodigy” being an exception. When I asked Wil about the likelihood of such a project, he shared his perspective:
Through the span of approximately 60 years in Star Trek, we’ve come to understand that anything can happen. Characters with the ability to manipulate spacetime and thoughts can essentially be placed anywhere. As an avid fan of Star Trek, the characters, and Prodigy, I am eager for more stories set outside of Starfleet. My fascination lies in discovering what this universe is like before and after Federation presence. What transpires on these planets? What are their unique stories?
Wil Wheaton raises an intriguing idea that I’ve pondered for some time. In my view, what makes “Star Trek” unique and captivating is the exploration of the galaxy through the lens of Starfleet’s peacekeepers. However, it would add depth and complexity to the series if we could also experience stories from the perspective of characters who aren’t bound by the Prime Directive or other Starfleet regulations. Wesley Crusher seems like a strong candidate for this role given his acquaintance with both worlds.
Starfleet isn’t under the control of the Travelers, yet it’s challenging for this entity to be regulated by Starfleet due to its distinctive character. This dynamic influences how Starfleet functions, and there could be occurrences that the wider universe remains oblivious to. As per Wheaton:
The Travelers are intended to take a hands-off approach. They monitor situations, maintain order, and subtly correct any deviations. The thought that Wesley defied the rules to remain in this universe due to his affection for it and strong conviction is profoundly resonating. This suggests that he values it enough to delve deeper into it. Absolutely, I’m intrigued by it.
Wesley Crusher’s role as a Traveler sets him apart because he actively works to safeguard the Prime Timeline and extinguish any threats that could potentially wipe it out. This may be the reason why “Star Trek” took so long to reintroduce one of its former characters!
The Sweet Reason Why Wil Wheaton Was ‘Thrilled’ To Return For Star: Trek Prodigy

If it’s certain that a Wesley Crusher spinoff will never materialize, I would at the very least expect him to appear in “Star Trek: Prodigy” for its third season. However, we don’t yet know if there will even be a third season.
I’m a big fan of that excellent “Trek” series and have often advocated for it as the best one. So, I’d be thrilled to watch more episodes using my Netflix subscription. Fingers crossed that at Comic-Con in San Diego, we hear some good news about the show’s continuation from the streaming service.
If the opportunity for more “Prodigy” doesn’t materialize, Wesley Crusher hasn’t been completely cut off. As a Traveler, he has the unique ability to transcend spatial and temporal boundaries. Therefore, if “Prodigy” isn’t an option, perhaps he will be included in “Strange New Worlds” or the upcoming “Starfleet Academy” spinoff instead.
