As a long-time Marvel fan who grew up watching the X-Men movies, I find myself at a crossroads. The excitement of seeing my favorite mutants finally joining the MCU is tinged with a touch of melancholy, as I ponder the future of Cyclops in this new universe. Tye Sheridan‘s recent statement about his uncertainty regarding his return to the role resonates deeply with me.
For quite some time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has remained a powerhouse in entertainment, consistently delivering fresh content both on the big screen and through streaming services like Disney+. After Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox, characters such as Deadpool and the X-Men were finally allowed to enter the shared universe, leaving fans eagerly anticipating updates about future Marvel movies. Recently, actor Tye Sheridan, who played Cyclops, has shared his thoughts on the possibility of reprising his role in relation to the X-Men.
The X-Men film series had a prolonged run, featuring two different sets of actors for specific roles. Characters with mutant abilities have been gradually appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (as hinted in the credits scene of The Marvels), but it remains uncertain when the X-Men will officially unite on the silver screen. Tye Sheridan portrayed Scott Summers in the last two installments of the Fox series, and recently discussed with ScreenRant his thoughts on potentially reprising that character. In Sheridan’s own words:
It’s uncertain for me. If there are additional tales to be shared, it seems likely that they exist. The question is whether the audience has an interest in these stories and whether we’ve reached a point of saturation with this type of filmmaking or if fresh approaches could revitalize them. In truth, I can’t say for certain.
It appears that Sheridan, being a Cyclops character, seems to share the same level of uncertainty as the general public regarding the role of X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Additionally, he expresses doubt about whether the X-Men stories have reached their conclusion with the current cast of actors from the earlier X-Men films.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the X-Men movies remain somewhat enigmatic. However, Kevin Feige and his team have been strategically integrating characters from the X-Men universe’s history into various projects on both small and large screens. For instance, Patrick Stewart reprised his role as Professor X in Doctor Strange 2, while Kelsey Grammer portrayed Beast in The Marvels. Notably, the most significant link has been the return of Hugh Jackman as Logan in Deadpool & Wolverine, accompanied by several other versions of X-Men characters.
The extraordinary popularity of X-Men ’97 demonstrated the strong affinity fans have for those Marvel Universe characters, ensuring that whenever the X-Men make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there will be a considerable audience tuning in. Tye Sheridan found his stride as Scott Summers during Dark Phoenix, but unfortunately, that marked the conclusion of Fox’s series. Given his age, he could potentially continue portraying the character, yet it remains uncertain what Kevin Feige has in store for the mutants.
Upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, “Captain America: A New World,” will premiere in theaters on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. In the meantime, take a look at the scheduled release dates for movies in 2025.
