The movie “Counterstrike,” also known as “Contraataque,” directed by Mexican filmmaker Chava Cartas, keeps delighting audiences worldwide with pulse-pounding action. True to its word, it offers a plethora of explosive sequences that any action movie enthusiast would appreciate. Debuted on the streaming platform on Friday, it quickly climbed up the charts, now sitting comfortably at number two.
Chava Cartas gained significant recognition due to her work on the action series “Rosario Tijeras,” penned by Jose Ruben Escalante Mendez. The cast of “Counterstrike” includes Luis Alberti, Noé Hernández, Luis Curiel, Leonardo Alonso, David Calderón, Guillermo Nava, Israel Islas, Mayra Batalla, Ishbel Bautista, and Frida Jiser. In a situation where a hostage rescue operation leads to the emergence of a new adversary, Captain Guerrero and his special forces team find themselves caught in an unexpected ambush by a criminal organization.
‘Counterstrike’ Is a No-Nonsense Action Movie
One of the cartel enforcers proclaims, “I want each one of them completely destroyed,” he says. Unbeknownst to him, he has encountered an adversary. Indeed, Counterstrike appears to be a recipe for an action-packed movie, as a tight-knit band of soldiers and friends, who seem invincible, engage in a fight against insurmountable odds…and countless bullets.
Following an unexpected intervention in a kidnapping incident during their shopping spree, the action-packed team, known as Counterstrike, discovers themselves in the crosshairs of a merciless cartel. Reminiscent of Liam Neeson’s Bryan Mills and Keanu Reeves’ John Wick, the adversaries are clueless about the individuals they’ve picked a fight with. In this instance, these aren’t ordinary enemies; they’re elite Mexican Special Forces soldiers, dubbed Murciélagos, who can only be defeated when attacked from behind. Prepare for a challenge trying to catch them off guard.
In addition to Counterstrike, Netflix also released what appears to be another popular action movie contender titled Demon City. This revenge thriller premiered on February 27, 2025, and quickly climbed charts prior to the release of Counterstrike, based on its live-action adaptation of the manga “Oni Goroshi” by Masamichi Kawabe. Demon City tells the story of a legendary former assassin who, following the apparent death of his family, embarks on a violent quest for vengeance. The first trailer for Demon City has drawn comparisons to the John Wick series among action enthusiasts due to its theme of revenge.
In contrast, although Counterstrike achieved a significant victory during its streaming premiere, it failed to secure the number one position at present. Instead, that title belongs to Despicable Me 4, the much-loved animated series featuring Steve Carell, which continues to expand with another film. It appears that even massive explosions struggle to outshine the humorous adventures of a former villain and his band of mischievous minions.
