Approximately one year ago at San Diego Comic Con, it was unveiled that ‘Lazarus’ is an upcoming expansive, globetrotting sci-fi thriller. Set in the year 2052, this story takes place in a near future where a remarkable cure-all drug called Hapna has mostly eradicated human suffering. However, the creator of this miracle drug, Dr. Skinner, mysteriously disappears following its distribution to the public.

Three years later, he resurfaces as a harbinger of doom, causing untold deaths and the collapse of civilization. The drug Hapna, unknowingly ingested by many, begins to manifest its lethal, retrospective effects three years post-consumption; it was a deadly trap for anyone who took even a single dose. In 30 days, humanity will start dying out. To prevent this catastrophe, the world’s top agents are assembled under the name “Lazarus” task force to locate Skinner, who possesses the only known cure. Their mission: find him, develop a vaccine, and save humanity before it’s too late.

The Impressive People Behind Lazarus (Including the Director of John Wick)

Watanabe’s projects are known for their distinctive flair, and fortunately, “Lazarus” lives up to this reputation in terms of both its soundtrack and visual effects. Notably, Studio MAPPA is responsible for the animation on “Lazarus,” a name that will undoubtedly spark interest among veteran anime enthusiasts.

In the past, MAPPA has been acclaimed for producing visually captivating anime such as “Dorohedoro” and “Kakegurui”. They are likely to continue delivering their signature style of dynamic action that they have mastered over time. Additionally, they were in charge of two non-fantasy projects by Watanabe, namely “Terror in Resonance” and “Kids on the Slope”. Fans of the melodious soundtrack from “Cowboy Bebop” will also find delight in the array of musical guests contributing to the score, with notable figures like “Kamasi Washington”, “Floating Points”, and “Bonobo” all playing a role in its composition.

Sola Entertainment, known for their impressive portfolio of work, will also be involved in new productions. Notably, they’ve collaborated on video game adaptations such as “Shenmue: The Animation” and “Halo: Legends”, and have contributed to various projects on Adult Swim. Their forthcoming “Rick and Morty” anime and “Ninja Kamui” project may have laid the groundwork for “Lazarus” to air on the late-night network as well.

If you loved the thrilling action scenes in “Cowboy Bebop,” you’ll be delighted to hear that John Wick franchise director Chad Stahelski is involved with a new project, titled “Lazarus.” Yes, the man behind all John Wick films has signed up for this series! His role will be to create action sequences, which could potentially bring a new level of intensity compared to Shinichiro Watanabe’s previous works. Catch “Lazarus” in early 2025 on Adult Swim.
