Craig Thomas, ‘How I Met Your Mother’ Co-Creator, to Release Debut Novel

Craig Thomas, the co-creator of How I Met Your Mother, is set to release his first novel.

On November 4, 2025, Hanover Square Press plans to publish the book titled “That’s Not How It Happened“, as was revealed last Friday.

The narrative in That’s Not How It Happened revolves around a family, whose life story is adapted into a film by Hollywood.

Paige hadn’t initially planned on being a stay-at-home mom, but when her spouse’s screenwriting career took flight just as they were welcoming a son with Down syndrome into their family, the decision was practically made for her. Now, with her children nearing adulthood and her own path forward unclear, Paige pens a memoir detailing her journey of raising a child with special needs. To her surprise, her book skyrockets to the top of bestseller lists and catches the attention of Merritt Berkshire, a prominent actress-turned-producer, who is eager to transform Paige’s ‘inspiring’ tale into a film. This potential movie project could be just what Paige’s husband, Rob, needs as a means to revive his career – after all, who else would be more fitting to adapt Paige’s memoir?

The narrative holds special significance for Thomas because it is based on his journey as a parent to an adult son who has Jacobsen syndrome, a genetic condition that brings about ongoing health and developmental issues throughout one’s life.

As a gamer, I eagerly anticipate that this game will spark conversations among players about the way we perceive and discuss disability. It’ll make us ponder on who gets to narrate our tales, and it’ll showcase how love stories can manifest in countless forms.

April Osborn, a Senior Editor at Hanover Square Press, obtained the publishing rights for North America, following negotiations with Christy Fletcher at United Talent Agency.

The stars of “How I Met Your Mother”, Josh Radnor and Cobie Smulders, will additionally provide voiceovers for the audiobook version of Thomas’ book, with production handled by Harlequin Audio.

Thomas’ ex-workmate, as well as the co-creator of “How I Met Your Mother”, Carter Bays, unveiled his first book in the year 2022.

That’s Not How It Happened will be published on Nov. 4, 2025
