Immediately spotting it, you’ll find a media that transports you to an era where the internet was still young, and webtoons were at their comedic peak. If there’s one platform that symbolizes this best, it’s Newgrounds, recognizable by its unique style evident in both classic and modern games. Despite Butterscotch Shenanigans not having ties to Newgrounds, Crashlands possesses a whimsical, Flash-like tone that captures the essence of the site.

Despite taking a break, the creators have expanded their sci-fi world in Crashlands 2. This 2D survival-crafting adventure takes you on an expedition through uncharted territories of a bizarre alien planet. Along the way, you’ll encounter both friendly and hostile creatures eager to interact with your meaningful actions.

What is Crashlands 2?

The tale is set in an uncharted space era where the Bureau of Shipping manages numerous intergalactic shipments. Our protagonist, a delivery worker called Flux, and her robot companion, Juicebox, are at the heart of this narrative.

Following an alien’s powerful jolt that left them stranded on a planet named Woanope, Flux and Juicebox united to stay alive, rescue Woanope, and return to their duties – a feat that earned them heroic acclaim. After basking in admiration and stardom for some time, Flux and Juicebox found themselves back in the vicinity of Woanope when an unexpected energy surge propelled their ship out of the atmosphere, causing another crash on the planet. Realizing strange alterations to Woanope, they embarked on a mission to protect it from a fresh danger while avoiding meeting an untimely end.

Crashing over Crashlands 2

Approximately ten years have passed since the debut of Crashlands, and technology has significantly evolved since then. Some of these advancements are evident in Crashlands 2, as characters, foes, and flora appear more lively and springy. The artwork seems to use cel-shading, making the creatures stand out more against the vibrant backdrop. This effect is particularly noticeable during day and night transitions, where certain elements become more vivid, encouraging continued exploration regardless of the time.

In this new journey, the crafting system reappears with several significant updates. Unlike your first adventure where you were mostly on your own, this time around you’ll frequently meet peculiar and captivating characters. These characters often have tasks for you, but they also encourage you to form friendships to gain Insights. These Insights provide you with new recipes for tools, buildings, gear, and assorted trinkets that are more useful than they initially appear. The more friends you make, the more items you can create, the more quests you can undertake, and ultimately, the richer your experience becomes.

Even though Woanope was saved last time, it’s still a wild and dangerous place. You may find more towns and safe spaces while exploring, but the roaming beasts are relentless and all too happy to hunt you down.
That’s probably the most significant issue: Time. Crashlands 2 is not a game for the impatient since you’ll spend a lot of time doing nothing. Researching Insights can take ages, even when you max out your bond with someone. Gathering can take a while, especially when you need a specific drop and the sources decide to play hard.

To collect specific drops, you’ll require certain insights, but even then, it’s all up to Woanope’s random number generator (RNG). Add to that the recurring mechanics of limited-time resources and encounters, and the process can become prolonged. Similar to farming in real life, this game offers a title you can gradually work on throughout the week.

In simple terms, Crashlands 2 is the newest addition to the Crashlands series, where you traverse an intriguing 2D alien planet with sci-fi elements, meet various alien beings, and engage in survival and crafting gameplay. The graphics are appealing, the crafting system improves when it’s connected to character interactions, and the wilderness continues to offer a rewarding challenge for both beginners and experts alike. Occasionally, movements might seem sluggish, and finding and creating items can take some time, but these aspects contribute to the overall experience. You won’t just crash and stumble upon solutions; instead, you’ll need to put in effort and earn your new discoveries along the way.
