As a lifelong fan of comics and DC Universe, I can confidently say that “Creature Commandos” has set the stage for an exhilarating new era in the world of superhero storytelling. Having witnessed the highs and lows of the DCEU, it’s truly refreshing to see a fresh, innovative approach like this one.
The animated series, Creature Commandos, launches James Gunn’s fresh take on the DC Universe successfully, garnering praise across the board on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans were taken aback when it was revealed that this lesser-known comic book team’s series would be the initial installment in the revamped cinematic universe. Instead of starting with a well-established Justice League member in a movie, they chose an unconventional route by debuting an animated series on a streaming platform. So far, it seems that this risk has proven beneficial for the DCU.
The Creature Commandos made a stellar entrance on Rotten Tomatoes with a perfect score of 100%, backed by ten reviews. This number may adjust as more opinions roll in, but it’s an impressive beginning for James Gunn’s DC Studios. IGN’s Tyler Robertson awarded the series 8 out of 10, praising its unique blend of charming misfits, catchy tunes, humor, and violence. Jared Jones from the A.V. Club gave the series a B+, commending Gunn for maintaining his signature style while delivering weight and impact in this animated adaptation. Lauren Milici of Total Film stated that despite the chaos and flying body parts, Gunn’s monster mash still manages to convey the gravitas it often strives for, even when things get a bit dizzying – yet it still excels at providing entertaining thrills.
Though you might find similarities when comparing it to Gunn’s other creations, Creature Commandos has a unique charm of its own. Indeed, it follows the familiar style we’re accustomed to from Gunn, but this time with a fresh twist.
The score of 100% for ‘Creature Commandos’ is a significant leap from the initial DC Extended Universe (DCEU), with the debut film, ‘Man of Steel’, receiving only a 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes in June 2013. It wasn’t until the fourth DCEU movie, ‘Wonder Woman’, that a fresh rating was achieved, with 93%. Similarly, ‘Creature Commandos’ marks an achievement for director James Gunn, surpassing his previous two DC projects – ‘The Suicide Squad’ with 90% and ‘Peacemaker’ with 93%.
The DCU Begins Strong With ‘Creature Commandos’
2024 has been a challenging year for comic book movies, but superhero TV shows have flourished due to outstanding animated series like “X-Men ’97” and “My Adventures with Superman”, along with remarkable live-action productions such as “Agatha All Along” and “The Penguin”. The upcoming “Creature Commandos” seems set to join this esteemed group, promising a strong finish to the year. Moreover, it’s expected to boost anticipation for Gunn’s DCU. The much-awaited “Superman” movie, which Gunn is also helming and writing, is the first film in this new universe and is likely to see its hype soar soon, as the teaser trailer is slated for release in December, potentially before “The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim”.
2025 looks set to be an intriguing year for DC and Marvel fans, as both universes prepare for a box office clash. While the dominance of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) may have been overstated in 2010, the DCEU was then still finding its footing. However, the upcoming releases of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” and “Superman” next to each other could signal a shift in their respective fortunes. It remains uncertain at this point, but the arrival of “Creature Commandos” may mark the beginning of DC’s rise as a critically acclaimed favorite, while Marvel might experience a decline in audience appeal. The recent appointment of James Gunn as overseer for DC projects by Warner Bros. Discovery could prove to be one of their most astute decisions in years.
