As a cinephile who’s had the pleasure of witnessing some of the most iconic performances in film history, I must admit that revisiting Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe’s collaboration in “Virtuosity” was a nostalgia trip. Despite its initial critical drubbing, this sci-fi actioner has aged rather gracefully, especially when viewed through the lens of today’s AI-centric world.

As a seasoned film critic, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing some of the most remarkable performances in cinematic history. Among them, Academy Award winner Denzel Washington stands tall, not just as a titan of his generation, but as an icon whose influence spans across time. However, even a colossal talent like Washington isn’t exempt from the scrutiny of critics. One of his early, heavily criticized ventures has found its way onto Amazon Prime Video. Entitled “The Bone Collector,” Washington shared the screen with another esteemed Academy Award winner, Angelina Jolie, back in 1995, in a sci-fi action thriller.

Following remarkable portrayals in movies such as Cry Freedom, Glory, Malcolm X, and Philadelphia, the film Virtuosity was released in the year 1999, where Denzel Washington plays Parker Barnes, a former police officer who is jailed for avenging his family’s murder by a psychopath. During his incarceration, Barnes is selected to trial a cutting-edge virtual reality system, with the objective being to capture a digital entity known as SID 6.7, portrayed by Russell Crowe.

The character SID was developed based on profiles of numerous disturbed criminals, among them the individual who murdered Barnes’ family. Notably, this AI swiftly breaks free from its digital prison and causes chaos in the physical world. It falls upon Barnes to put a stop to it.

In a departure from his usual roles, it’s understood that “Virtuosity” presents a unique project for Denzel Washington. The actor is said to have significantly altered the storyline and dialogue during production. Although it might not be vying for the title of “best movie ever made,” “Virtuosity” certainly offers an enjoyable watch, with Washington delivering another captivating performance and Crowe reveling in his opportunity to ham it up dramatically.

Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe wouldn’t just encounter each other in “Virtuosity,” they also appeared together in “American Gangster” from 2007, where they found themselves on opposite ends of the legal system. Fortunately, their second collaboration turned out to be much more successful, as evidenced by its high rating of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes, which classifies it as “Certified Fresh.

Apart from their shared history, they now both connect through the “Gladiator” film series. Although they won’t act together, Denzel Washington is preparing to take on the role of power broker and ex-slave Macrinus in Ridley Scott’s upcoming sequel, “Gladiator II”. Russell Crowe’s character from the original movie appeared five years following his performance in “Virtuosity”, which earned him widespread praise and a well-deserved Academy Award for Best Actor.

Unfortunately, Maximus Decimus Meridius, portrayed by Crowe, won’t return for the sequel as he met his end in the original film. Instead, the focus shifts to Paul Mescal, who will play an older Lucius Verus. After witnessing Maximus’ demise at the hands of his uncle and Rome’s emperors conquering his homeland, Lucius is compelled to enter the Colosseum himself in the upcoming movie, tentatively set for release in the U.S. on November 22, 2024.
