In this adaptation, Convery and James deliver compelling, well-grounded performances that anchor the story’s madness. Convery skillfully portrays the traumatized, pioneering spirit reminiscent of the Monkey’s methods, which Perkins strategically chooses not to elucidate. However, it is James who delivers an exceptional performance, embodying both the audience surrogate and the antagonist with a dry wit and an eagerness to embrace the script’s most audacious elements. This performance shines brightest when James confronts his on-screen counterpart, displaying two distinct personalities trapped in a peculiar loop of mortality.

According to Katie Rife from The AV Club, the film adaptation of The Monkey received a B grade. She points out that the movie doesn’t aim to be scary and isn’t successful in being so. Instead, it offers a mix of graphic gore and comedy elements that are intentionally absurd. I, as a follower, don’t conform with the advice of not digging too deep when it comes to analyzing the mysterious deaths in the titular toy. Unlike other critics, I strive to find logic behind these tragic events. Siddhant Adlakha from Inverse shares this viewpoint and argues that Osgood Perkins’ exploration of death and remorse falls short. According to Adlakha, this portrayal lacks the necessary depth and emotional impact to resonate deeply with viewers.

In its own right, “The Monkey” struggles to create a smooth, rhythmic roller coaster ride, lacking consistency in both its highs and lows, as well as its twists and turns. Compared to Perkins’ previous work, “Longlegs,” which despite its flaws, built an ominous atmosphere, “The Monkey” feels oddly disconnected, almost making “Longlegs” seem accidental. Where “Longlegs” had a claustrophobic feel, “The Monkey” lacks visual and thematic unity, relying more on sarcastic humor reminiscent of Deadpool. This tone contrasts sharply with its attempts to explore serious themes such as parenthood and mortality.

According to Tom Jorgensen from IGN, this movie is “exceptional,” scoring a 9 out of 10. He also describes it as one of the most impressive horror-comedies in recent times.
