Movie enthusiasts who love action-packed films will find plenty to enjoy as the 2025 movie schedule unfolds, with a new title set to grace the big screen soon. The film is titled Novocaine, an exciting new production featuring Jack Quaid, best known for his roles in The Hunger Games, Scream, and The Boys. Although the movie stars a familiar face, its plot veers slightly from the usual path. After critics have had a sneak peek, there seems to be general agreement on one key point despite differing opinions in other areas.
In the latest production by filmmakers Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, the protagonist, Nathan Caine – a quiet bank employee with an unusual condition that makes him immune to pain – finds himself thrust into danger when his girlfriend is abducted by robbers from his very own bank. As events unfold, this leads to a violent tale where Nathan must confront lethal adversaries. In TopMob’s review of Novocaine, Eric Eisenberg expressed generally favorable opinions but felt the unique premise could have been developed more fully. However, he highly commended the lead actor’s performance.
The primary motivation to watch Novocaine lies in Jack Quaid’s performance and his growing reputation as a captivating lead actor. Over the course of just two days on screen, we witness Nathan’s life accelerate from a complete standstill to breakneck speed (from fearing solid foods to stealing a police car to chase a gang of armed criminals). Quaid possesses the charisma to pull off this transformation convincingly. He injects the character with a magnetic quality that draws you in and makes you hope for positive change, and he’s also skilled at comedy, earning laughter through his portrayal of an innocent navigating dangerous situations and through physical humor.
Regarding this movie, the actor from Oppenheimer was undeniably pushed to his limits physically, as suggested by the trailers for Novocaine. Despite playing a character who can’t feel pain, Jack Quaid delivers some intensely violent scenes that are action-packed and comical. Rachel Labonte of Screen Rant highly appreciated the ultra-violent action-comedy film, and she had specific compliments for Jack Quaid’s performance.
Regarding the humor, I initially worried that the Novocaine trailer might have given away the funniest parts and lessened Quaid’s performance’s appeal. But luckily, it didn’t turn out that way, making the movie a genuinely hilarious watch that left the audience in stitches at my theater. A significant portion of this humor can be attributed to Quaid, who masterfully combines Nate’s polite and awkward persona with his relentless pursuit to save Sherry at any cost, thus solidifying himself as a top-tier leading man. His comedic delivery is spot-on throughout the film.
The consistent theme across these reviews appears to be the intense admiration for Jack Quaid’s acting. Besides enduring immense pain, Quaid’s character Nathan is also deeply involved in a heartwarming romantic plot with Sherry, portrayed by Amber Midthunder in Prey. Bill Bria from Slash Film even noted the romantic-comedy aspects of the film in his review. Remarkably, he drew parallels between Caine’s predicament and one featured in a movie starring Dennis Quaid (Jack Quaid’s father) and Meg Ryan.
In much the same way that the presence of Quaid and Midthunder infuses the movie with a charming romantic-comedy atmosphere, the selection of Quaid for ‘Novocaine’ enhances its underlying noir elements. Sherry, who is both a distressed damsel and a divine femme fatale, embodies these dual roles, while Caine assumes both the tough action hero persona and the role of a noir-style hapless victim. Remarkably, or perhaps not so coincidentally, Caine’s struggle for love mirrors that of the 1988 remake of ‘D.O.A,’ which featured Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan as the lead actors.
While many people seem to appreciate the movie, IndieWire’s Kate Erbland isn’t one of them. She didn’t dismiss it entirely but did point out that it appears inconsistent in quality. Despite serving as a good platform for Jack Quaid, she suggests the film lacks balance.
The idea presented here is intriguing: suppose an ordinary nerd was genetically predisposed to go all out to win back the love of the girl he adores. At first, Nate shares our surprise, but as the story unfolds through Jacobson’s script and Berk and Olsen’s direction, there is a sudden, unexpected twist that undermines this concept in various unfortunate ways. Granted, it could be explained that Nate’s unusual skill in fighting bad guys comes from his lack of sensitivity to pain they inflict on him. However, it seems unnecessary that every adversary he faces must also be a muscle-bound, self-destructive individual.
According to Mashable’s Belen Edwards, she found the movie quite enjoyable, highlighting its action, humor, and romantic components. Moreover, she praised the actor from “My Adventures with Superman” for his exceptional portrayal of an ordinary individual who unwittingly finds himself in extraordinary situations.
Discussing the star’s intensity, [Quaid] significantly ramps up when Nathan embarks on his mission to apprehend the gang of bank robbers who abduct Sherry. Once more, he finds himself in a high-pressure scenario as an ordinary guy. He’s never fired a gun and has little knowledge of combat, leading to some amusing scenes where a clumsy Nathan struggles to appear menacing towards his adversaries. Despite his inability to bluff convincingly, he throws himself wholeheartedly into the challenge.
Currently, Jack Quaid is experiencing a lot of professional success and delivering impressive performances in top-notch productions. Just this year, he shared the lead in the critically acclaimed science fiction film titled “Companion“. Upcoming projects on his schedule that have generated excitement are his reprisal in Season 5 of “The Boys“, marking the end of the series. Judging by the positive feedback for his role in “Novocaine“, it appears Quaid is poised to add another successful project to his resume, demonstrating his ability to rise to the occasion.
Absolutely, feel free to form your own opinions about the actor’s performance once the movie “Novocaine” hits theaters on March 14th.
