As a longtime animation enthusiast and parent of two young kids who can’t get enough of these magical adventures, I must say that my anticipation for Netflix’s new movie “Spellbound” was sky-high after reading all those reviews! It’s always exciting to see how different critics perceive the same film, but it seems like the general consensus is a mix of praise and caution.
Many people are eagerly anticipating the 2025 film lineup, particularly the remake of Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler as Disney’s first princess. But if you can’t wait that long, or at all, you can still catch Zegler in action as royalty! In the upcoming Netflix movie Spellbound, she lends her voice to Princess Ellian. This brave character embarks on a mission to lift the curse that has turned her parents into beasts and divided her kingdom. Since critics have already had a sneak peek of this family-friendly film, let’s take a look at what the early reviews are saying.
Apart from Rachel Zegler, the movie “Spellbound” boasts a talented ensemble including John Lithgow, Jenifer Lewis, Tituss Burgess, and others. This project has been in development for some time and made a few stops before finding its home on Netflix through Skydance Animation’s collaboration with the streaming service. Isabella Soares from Collider believes it was worth the wait, giving the film an 8 out of 10 rating and commenting positively about it.
In essence, Spellbound offers a captivating and innovative perspective on fairytales, diverging from the traditional tales of the Brothers Grimm and presenting alternative versions of “happy endings.” Featuring an impressive original score, breathtaking graphics, and a unique blend of familiar themes with contemporary influences, it makes for one of the most remarkable animated films this year. The movie appears as an imaginative journey into the real world, thanks to its engaging cast and creative team who breathe freshness into the material. With Spellbound gracing our screens in 2024, it’s certainly a production not to be missed!
As a gamer, I wholeheartedly agree with Tessa Smith of Mama’s Geeky who describes “Spellbound” as the ultimate family-friendly flick, brimming with a heartfelt message, an outstanding voice cast, humor that hits the spot, and music that’s simply beautiful. Truly, there’s a whole lot to adore in this film!
Enchanted is a film that both kids and adults can enjoy, providing delightful tunes that stick in your head, stunning visuals that captivate, and a tale so heartwarming it’ll tug at the heartstrings of parents everywhere.
Some critics aren’t as enthusiastic about the 2024 movie. For example, Mae Abdulbaki from ScreenRant gave it a 5 out of 10, appreciating the cast and animation, but she felt that the film drags on when trying to convey its message about evolving family relationships. Abdulbaki further commented:
In terms of animated films with a stronger impact, Spellbound finds itself in the mid-range category. Children will find it enjoyable, although the lengthy runtime of nearly two hours could test their patience as they wait for the conclusion. It manages to maintain their interest, but it’s the delivery that prevents the animation from reaching its full potential for greatness. I can’t help but wish that it had maintained a stronger emotional core throughout the story.
As a gamer putting forth my thoughts, I’d say Spellbound left me underwhelmed. The animation seemed lackluster and didn’t quite captivate me like other animations this year. The story felt dull and failed to create that magical feeling it was aiming for. It seems this movie is struggling to stand out from the impressive lineup of animated films we’ve seen in 20XX, according to Chase Hutchinson of The Wrap.
At its core, there’s a deep emotional resonance, but it remains underdeveloped, failing to fully emerge into clarity. The primary conflicts seem artificial and tend to overshadow the genuine emotional turmoil portrayed in Spellbound. By the climax of the film, you recognize how little insight you have into the characters of Ellian and her parents, as they were only sketched with broad, shallow strokes.
According to Cody Dericks from Next Best Picture, while there’s commendable voice performance, especially by Tituss Burgess and Nathan Lane, the overall film seems incomplete with underdeveloped ideas, unimaginative soundtracks, and subpar animation. He rates it 4 out of 10, stating that the movie lacks originality and falls short in various aspects.
Compared to some of Disney’s less spectacular productions, Spellbound seems rather ordinary. Despite introducing a surprising plot turn not typically found in big animation movies, it lacks originality overall and might be too sluggish and dull for young audiences to stay engaged with.
In this case, it appears that opinions among critics are divided across various aspects, such as the animation’s quality, the music selection, and the clarity of the message conveyed. However, they all seem to acknowledge the exceptional talent displayed by the voice actors. If you find Spellbound an adventure that appeals to you, you can stream it right now with a Netflix subscription.
