Cronos: The New Dawn Looks Like the Dead Space Successor The Callisto Protocol Wasn’t

2022’s The Callisto Protocol is often referred to as the spiritual successor of the Dead Space series, but instead, Bloober Team, who are developing 2024’s Silent Hill 2 remake, have crafted a distinctly fresh horror experience that carries the same atmosphere as modern-day Dead Space.

Later this year, we’re releasing Cronos: The New Dawn, and you’ll be absolutely thrilled by the terrifying gameplay overhaul we’ve prepared for you!

Time Travelling Horror

In the two-minute gameplay trailer of Cronos, there’s ample footage to convey to players not only its anticipated eerie vibe, but also its disturbing and unpleasant aspects. Take a look!

The press release for the game reads:

In two distinct time frames – a bleak post-apocalyptic future and 1980s Poland, specifically the industrial Nowa Huta district – Cronos: The New Dawn places you in the role of a Traveler, a representative of the enigmatic Collective, who journeys from a dystopian tomorrow to travel back in time and rescue crucial individuals before they meet their fate in the apocalypse. As you delve into a world teetering on the edge of destruction, you’ll come across gruesome adversaries called Orphans – nightmarish creatures spawned from humanity’s deepest fears and twisted imaginations.

Glancing at the gruesome creatures and terrifying elements in the trailer, it undeniably evokes memories of the monsters from Dead Space. The protagonist, clad in a protective suit, also seems reminiscent of Isaac from Dead Space, or the Big Daddies from BioShock.

As a die-hard fan, I must say that while battling monstrosities reminiscent of those from The Thing is nothing new to me, this game truly stands out due to its innovative Merge mechanics.

“Don’t Let Them Merge!”

In the trailer, you’ll notice that slain enemies quickly regain their strength and transform into a larger, more terrifying entity, often referred to as a murder demon. The central aspect of this game is that if you don’t burn the bodies of defeated monsters, they can be assimilated by surviving ones. This gruesome process, called Merging, causes enemies to become faster, stronger, and more resilient, with increased abilities in combat. They essentially evolve into nightmarish abominations.

Upon reflection, there’s an uncanny similarity between the Orphans and clickers from “The Last of Us,” as both share a certain likeness. Moreover, just like the Rat King in “The Last of Us Part II,” which is a massive creature amalgamated from multiple infected individuals, these Orphans can combine to form a new, terrifying monster.

With a release date expected for this year, we should see more of Cronos in the next few months.

The exact launch date for “Cronos: The New Dawn” hasn’t been disclosed yet, but we can anticipate it will be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5 towards the end of this year, perhaps even in time for the spooky Halloween season.
