‘Cruel Intentions’ Canceled After One Season

Unfortunately, there won’t be a second season for “Cruel Intentions.” The 2024 continuation of the 1999 film with the same title premiered its sole episode (to date) back in November of last year.

The program faced a lengthy journey towards its debut, initially premiering on Freevee in 2021 and later shifting to Amazon Prime Video in 2023. Earlier attempts at bringing the show to life included a pilot based on the film that NBC ordered but subsequently cancelled in 2016, as well as an unsuccessful prequel series from Fox that never saw daylight.

The TV series took a long time to come out and first appeared on Freevee in 2021. After that, it moved to Amazon Prime Video in 2023. An attempt to make the show based on the movie was made by NBC in 2016, but they cancelled it. Also, an attempt at a prequel series didn’t get aired on Fox.

The Amazon series featured Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, Savannah Lee Smith, Sara Silva, John Harlan Kim, Khobe Clarke, Sean Patrick Thomas, and Brooke Lena Johnson in its cast. Neal H. Moritz, who was a producer of the original film, and Roger Kumble, who wrote and directed it, also took on executive producer roles.

In this Amazon series, we have Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, Savannah Lee Smith, Sara Silva, John Harlan Kim, Khobe Clarke, Sean Patrick Thomas, and Brooke Lena Johnson as the main stars. The original film’s producer, Neal H. Moritz, and its writer-director, Roger Kumble, were also involved behind the scenes as executive producers.

According to its plot summary, “Cruel Intentions” focuses on the students of an elite Washington D.C.-neighboring university called Manchester College. In this institution, reputation is paramount, fraternities and sororities are highly respected, and two ruthless step-siblings, Caroline Merteuil (Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Burgess), will go to any lengths to maintain their dominant position in the competitive social pecking order. After a hazing incident poses a threat to the entire Greek Life system, they’ll stop at nothing to safeguard their power and reputation – including pursuing Annie Grover (Smith), the daughter of the Vice President of the United States. Relationships will suffer, loyalties will be questioned, and truths will come to light in this contemporary royal court that is Manchester College.

Back in the day, I was totally hooked on a flick that delved into the lives of wealthy high school students in bustling New York City. The stellar cast included Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair. This movie was a brilliant on-screen interpretation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ timeless novel, “Dangerous Connections.
