Tom Cruise, known for his daring stunts, is not only excelling in producing sequels but also making them surpass the original versions. This talent has been showcased extensively in the Mission: Impossible film series and most notably with the blockbuster success of Top Gun: Maverick. By crafting immersive narratives, Cruise is enhancing the cinematic experience by offering stories that are optimized for big-screen viewing due to their stunning visuals and production quality. It appears that his next goal is to revisit the 1990 film Days of Thunder, with a fresh perspective adapted for today’s audiences.
Currently, NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon has shared with Associated Press News his discussions regarding a potential follow-up to the film “Days of Thunder” with Tom Cruise. This movie, which bears Cruise’s sole writing credit, presents an intriguing opportunity for another legacy sequel akin to films like “Top Gun“. Notably, both movies were helmed by Tony Scott. A remake could highlight the advancements in filmmaking technology, enabling a more immersive portrayal of high-speed race car driving. Speaking on the potential development, Gordon expressed his thoughts as follows:
“I’ve discussed the project with Tom since I want him involved. We hope to join in if it comes to fruition. He seems to be hinting at it, but I’m unsure. Let’s wait and see how things develop. If that doesn’t pan out, I’m optimistic that another project will bring NASCAR back to the big screen, or perhaps an engaging documentary series, or something even more exciting than what we have now.
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the prospect of seeing Tom Cruise back in action, whether it’s through a riveting sequel that continues his cinematic legacy or an engaging docuseries that delves deeper into his remarkable career. Either way, it promises to be a triumphant return!
‘Days of Thunder’ Has Great Legacy Sequel Potential
The 1990 movie featured thrilling racing scenes of its own, which contributed to a sense of realism in the film that Tom Cruise has continued to strive for in subsequent works. Much like how the aerial combat and flying were expertly portrayed in Top Gun: Maverick, it appears that a sequel to Days of Thunder could effectively recreate that intensity with fresh perspectives, particularly if NASCAR experts such as Jeff Gordon are brought on board to enhance the film’s authenticity.
Just like other sports, NASCAR has changed significantly since the movie “Days of Thunder.” Watching it again through the perspective of Cole Trickle, played by Tom Cruise in the original film, could stir up similar emotions of nostalgia and the passing of time as his portrayal of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell did in his 2022 movie. Interestingly, Cruise’s former collaborator is already busy bringing a new type of motor racing to the big screen with IMAX technology.
Joseph Kosinski, who helmed “Top Gun: Maverick,” is preparing to debut a movie based on Formula One racing instead of NASCAR. Entitled “F1,” this film boasts an impressive cast including Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Lewis Hamilton, Kerry Condon, and Javier Bardem. Produced in partnership with the FIA, the organization responsible for governing the sport, it deviates from NASCAR but could pave the way for Tom Cruise’s potential approach to a new “Days of Thunder” sequel focusing on a different racing genre. In the meantime, catch Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning” hitting theaters this July. You can stream “Days of Thunder” for free on Pluto TV, or rent/purchase it through standard digital platforms.
