It is with great sorrow—and some mild surprise—that we report the arrest of two men, whose nefarious activities in the realm of cryptocurrency have resulted in the unfortunate loss of a six-figure sum by a gentleman of 75 years from the quaint region of Aberdeenshire. Truly, such deceptions are most distressing, though it is to be hoped that our dear victim was not entirely unaware of the perils of modern investments. Yet, we must accept that the unassuming might fall prey to such trickery.
The police, diligent as ever, commenced their investigation in the summer of 2024. And after much toing and froing—such is the nature of these matters—on the 18th of February, 2025, officers from the esteemed North East Division CID, with no small assistance from their counterparts in West Midlands and South Yorkshire, apprehended a 54-year-old gentleman in Coventry and a 36-year-old in Mexborough. How terribly convenient that they could be found and brought to account! One wonders whether they had been resting on their laurels, believing they had escaped justice.
Both gentlemen—if one can still call them such—have been formally charged with the crime of fraud. A report shall be dutifully submitted to the Procurator Fiscal, to be sure. We cannot imagine it will take long for the wheels of justice to turn and find them culpable.
Detective Sergeant David Williamson, ever the model of propriety, was kind enough to remind us of the importance of guarding against financial malfeasance. “This operation demonstrates our commitment to ensuring people are protected from fraud,” he stated with great conviction. One does so appreciate a man of duty, willing to stand against such vile behavior. “We will do everything in our power to bring those responsible to justice,” he boldly declared, as if any reasonable person would expect anything less.
And, as if to add to the seriousness of the matter, authorities have encouraged the public to remain vigilant in the face of fraudulent activities. “I would also encourage members of the public to be mindful of activity which appears fraudulent and to report this to police,” Williamson thoughtfully advised. One might suggest, however, that the public might already be somewhat alarmed by such unscrupulous behavior, and perhaps a tad more skeptical than in days of yore.
Meanwhile, over in Norway—ever the land of impeccable order—authorities have recently indicted four individuals for their involvement in a grand-scale fraud and money laundering scheme. This scam, which spanned multiple countries and defrauded thousands, saw over 900 million kroner flowing through the hands of these rogues. Over 700 million kroner was, no doubt, most artfully laundered via a Norwegian law firm and sent off to Asia, as if by some hidden hand. How delightful that they could so easily move such funds with little regard for decency.
The victims, poor souls, were recruited through a multi-level marketing structure (how terribly fashionable!) and were persuaded—no doubt with the charm of a smooth-talking gentleman—to buy cryptocurrency and shares in ventures that promised fortunes in gas fields, mining, and real estate. Alas, these promises were nothing more than smoke and mirrors, as the investments turned out to be as false as a summer breeze in the North.
