Discussions about who will take on the role of James Bond continue to swirl, but progress is being made behind the scenes for the upcoming 26th installment in the Bond franchise. Producers David Heyman and Amy Pascal are rumored to be involved, though no official announcement has been made due to the ongoing paperwork regarding Barbara Broccoli’s $1 billion bond rights buyout. The Sun reports that writers have already been recruited, but no formal confirmation has been given. Similarly, no decision has been made on the director for the next film, although Edward Berger and Alfonso Cuarón (known for films like Children of Men, Gravity, and Roma) are said to be contenders. According to Matthew Belloni of Puck, he predicts that Alfonso Cuarón will direct the film, marking his first project in seven years following his Apple TV+ series Disclaimer.
According to Belloni, the choice is a well-informed guess, not Chris Nolan. Since Nolan is committed to another project called “The Odyssey” for the next year and a half, Belloni doubts Amazon would want to wait that long. Instead, he believes Jeff Bezos might demand his Bond film immediately. This quick pace is suggested by the fact they approached these specific producers directly. Belloni further speculates that Alfonso Cuarón could be the director for this project. Belloni went on to say…
Alfonso Cuarón might be in line to direct the next James Bond movie. This speculation arises because he has a long-standing relationship with David Heyman, dating back nearly two decades to ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’. They’ve collaborated for a significant period and are reportedly friendly. Rumors suggest that discussions have taken place, a script is available, and they are considering this opportunity seriously. However, it’s important to note that no negotiations are currently underway, but I believe there’s a good chance Alfonso Cuarón will be the one at the helm.
The involvement of David Heyman in the Bond team is an encouraging sign for Alfonso Cuarón. Over the past few years, Heyman has been one of the most successful producers due to his company Heyday Films, which has seen great success with films like Wonka and Barbie. This comes after years of producing hits such as the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts movies, as well as Paddington films. More intriguingly, the studio has also been known for backing auteur-driven films, including Noah Baumbach’s White Noise and Marriage Story, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood, Derek Cianfrance’s The Light Between Oceans, and of course, Cuarón’s Gravity.
Alfonso Cuarón Almost Made a James Bond Movie Years Ago
Back in 2024 at the Marrakech Film Festival, as I shared with the eager audience (according to Variety), I’ve had chats about a James Bond movie way before that time. You might know me from directing the magical ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’, a venture initially taken up for financial reasons, but later transformed into an invaluable learning experience, culminating in what many consider the finest installment in the series. Well, after that, I was presented with an opportunity to direct a Bond film, but… (details omitted here)
Long ago, I was given an opportunity to direct a James Bond movie. Excitedly, I accepted, thinking, ‘Maybe I’ll give it a shot.’ However, when it came time for me to record all the dialogue and other aspects while another team handled the action scenes, it felt quite strange. I began to question whether I should proceed with the project. Later, I had dinner with Joel Coen and asked him about his thoughts on Bond. He responded positively, saying he enjoyed the franchise. I then inquired if he would be interested in directing a Bond film himself, to which he replied: “It seems like it falls into the category of a movie I’d love to watch but not make.
In that place, Cuarón discovered a lesson: some movies I rather watch than participate in making,” he remarked. It remains to be seen if he’ll use the same approach with the James Bond series, but it seems likely. If given the chance, perhaps he’ll choose Clive Owen, his star from ‘Children of Men’, for the role of Bond. Fingers crossed!
