Cyberpunk Edgerunners Sequel & Spin-Offs Addressed by Production Studio

As a dedicated follower of all things Cyberpunk and a long-time fan of CD Projekt’s work, I am thrilled to hear that more projects are on the horizon from the world of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The anime spin-off has been a breath of fresh air in an industry often plagued with mediocre cash grabs. It’s not every day that a video game adaptation manages to surpass its source material, but Edgerunners did just that, earning the 2023 Crunchyroll Anime of the Year Award.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that CD Projekt, the masterminds behind the video game sensation, Cyberpunk 2077, have plans to produce more captivating anime series within the same universe as Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Despite the rocky launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020, the franchise has bounced back with a vengeance, thanks to continuous updates and most significantly, an exceptional anime spin-off. This mesmerizing 10-episode series, titled Edgerunners, graced our screens on Netflix and was created by Rafal Jaki. Many underestimated the show as just another cash grab, but it surpassed all expectations with its unforgettable characters, stunning animation, and gripping narrative, ultimately winning the 2023 Crunchyroll Anime of the Year Award – akin to an Emmy in the anime world.

CD Projekt’s co-CEO, Michal Nowakowski, shared during their recent financial discussion that the studio intends to create additional animated shows derived from their successful game titles, including the popular ‘Witcher’ series. Fans are eagerly anticipating a sequel to the miniseries ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’, though Nowakowski did not provide specifics about a possible Season 2. However, he did mention that the company is actively exploring the development of further animated projects set within the universe of ‘Cyberpunk’.

“Absolutely, we have plans to expand our animations within the Cyberpunk universe. I can confirm that you’ll be seeing more in this area, but I’m unable to share further details at the moment.”

Drawing influence from groundbreaking novels such as William Gibson’s Neuromancer, the genre known as Cyberpunk presents a future society where body modifications have become commonplace, serving both as a mark of status and a means for military advancement. The series Edgerunners centers around David, a street-smart kid who’s won a scholarship to the prestigious Osaka school. However, upon discovering a potent military body mod, he is expelled from the institution and subsequently thrust into a life of crime, transforming into an Edgerunner — a criminal mercenary who carries out assignments against the powerful corporate elite in Night City.

In terms of video game adaptations, animated versions have been successful for quite some time now, with Netflix emerging as a leader in this field. Titles such as “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners,” “Castlevania,” and “Arcane” are just a few examples of the exceptional animated adaptations that Netflix has under its belt within the gaming industry.

In the interim before fresh animated series emerge in the Cyberpunk universe, enthusiasts can look forward to engrossing video game adaptations to tide them over. Excitingly, the second and concluding season of the critically-acclaimed Arcane series (derived from the League of Legends games) will debut on Netflix this November. The upcoming season continues immediately after the events of the first, with Jinx (Ella Purnell), having destroyed the Piltover Council, possibly triggering a full-scale conflict between the city and Zaun’s undercity.

Previously, enthusiasts of the Tomb Raider franchise have a highly anticipated animated adaptation to anticipate. Continuing from the successful “Survivor” series of games (released between 2013 and 2018), Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is the creation and writing of Tasha Huo. In this production, Hayley Atwell lends her voice to the character of Lara Croft as she encounters an adversary, Charles Devereaux (portrayed by Richard Armitage), who poses a formidable challenge to her both physically and mentally.
