Cynthia Erivo shares our excitement: She’s eagerly anticipating the November 2025 release of the last (and concluding) Wicked movies. Recently, she visited The Hollywood Reporter’s studio in Park City and hinted that she’s yet to catch Part 2. “I’ve only seen a tiny bit,” she confessed. “Not in its entirety. I know it’s currently being edited, but [Jon M. Chu] isn’t ready to show it yet. I plan on barging into the editing suite. I can’t bear to wait that long to watch this film.”
Cynthia Erivo traveled to town for the collection of the Sundance Film Festival’s Visionary Award, and coincidentally, the announcement of the Academy Award nominations occurred during her flight from London. Erivo is nominated in the best actress category, while “Wicked” earned a total of 10 nominations, including those for best picture and supporting actress (Ariana Grande). Knowing that the news about the nominations would break while she was airborne, despite her attempts to avoid her phone, Erivo found herself waking up to messages of congratulations from friends and family (including emotional voice notes from Grande). “The flight attendants didn’t notice me taking in the news,” she shares, “but they certainly saw me crying. They then provided a box of tissues, and I had to clarify that these were tears of joy. Despite giving me some space, the crew eventually gathered to congratulate me at the end of the flight.
A day prior to the Oscar nominations being revealed, the Broadway show “Wicked” unveiled their latest cast, with Lencia Kebede making history as the first Black actress to portray Elphaba permanently on Broadway. Erivo expressed her eagerness to attend Kebede’s debut performance, stating, “I haven’t met her yet, but I’m trying to be there for her first show.” Additionally, Erivo mentioned that she plans to send flowers as a gesture of celebration for this significant milestone in Kebede’s career.
