Cynthia Erivo Responds to Backlash Over Her Jesus Casting in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ Musical

Cynthia Erivo addresses the criticism she’s faced regarding her leading part in the upcoming production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar‘ at the Hollywood Bowl.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that the actress from “Wicked” would portray Jesus in a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Some conservative critics swiftly criticized her for accepting the role as a Black, queer woman. Yet, during an interview with Billboard, Erivo found herself chuckling at the criticism leveled against her.

As a gamer, I’d say something like this: “Why not give it a try? I know it might not appeal to everyone, but let me tell you, this isn’t just any performance. It’s a three-day extravaganza at the Hollywood Bowl where I get to belt out my heart and soul. So, if you come along, you might just find yourself thinking, ‘Oh, this is a musical, and it’s the most vibrant, colorful place on Earth!’

From August 1st to 3rd, the actress will appear on stage at the renowned Hollywood theater, sharing the spotlight with Adam Lambert who is portraying Judas in the production of “Jesus Christ Superstar.” This musical is a rock opera that recounts the final days of Jesus Christ, culminating in his crucifixion, as experienced by his betrayer, Judas. Originally introduced as a concept album, it made its Broadway debut in 1971. Over the years, it has undergone multiple revivals and also received a film adaptation, directed by Norman Jewison, in 1973.

Cynthia Erivo, the Tony Award winner from Broadway’s “The Color Purple,” has earlier appeared as Mary Magdalene in Morgan James’ female-centric rendition of the concept album.

The Grammy and Emmy winner came out publicly in 2022 on the cover of British Vogue.
