Fans of comic books have eagerly anticipated new Marvel films featuring X-Men characters for quite some time now, and while there have been more recent releases, we’re still waiting for the iconic mutant team to assemble on screen since the original movies. As we continue to wait, Cynthia Erivo, who is set to star in the movie adaptation of Wicked, has expressed her desire to play a significant character in the Marvel franchise. Her reasoning behind this choice has piqued my interest and I can’t help but hope she gets cast immediately.
At the 2025 National Board of Review Awards held on a Tuesday in New York, Erivo was queried about any other dream role she might have following the conclusion of her portrayal as Elphaba in the second “Wicked” movie later this year. Here’s what she had to say (via X).
I strongly desire to delve into the character of Storm, as I believe there’s much more depth to her than what we’ve seen so far – her immense power and the internal struggles she faces. It seems plausible that we could create a narrative that explores these aspects.
At the red-carpet premiere where “Wicked” was awarded Best Film, Erivo didn’t hesitate when discussing her desired future role. Although she is primarily recognized for her work in Broadway and musical theater, Erivo has expressed a strong interest in joining the Marvel universe to portray Ororo Munroe, also known as Storm.
The comic book character has been featured in comics since 1975, when she was brought to life by writer Len Wein and artist Dave Cockrum. Numerous actors aspire to be part of the Marvel universe because of its widespread popularity (or maybe because they admire the striking costume), but Erivo is eager to portray this role to delve into Storm’s distinctive emotional struggles as a mutant. Marvel, are you listening? It’s high time for this actress to conquer the skies once more, this time as a mutant!

Lupita Nyong’o donned a Storm costume for Halloween, which has left me eagerly anticipating her portrayal of the Marvel character in the future.
Initially, Halle Berry was the one who portrayed the character in a film, yet there were whispers about her being involved with both Deadpool and Wolverine, but she herself clarified that she had never received an official offer to resume the role. Later on, Alexandra Shipp took up the part of a younger Storm in X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix. However, it’s speculated that Marvel Cinematic Universe might opt for a different Storm actress to revamp the series for a fresh audience.
If Erivo lands the role, her character would have some similarities with Elphaba/The Wicked Witch because Storm hails from an ancestry of African witch-priestesses. Notably, she possesses weather-controlling powers and is renowned as one of Marvel’s most powerful characters, earning favor among many fans.
It’s great to speculate that Cynthia Erivo may have landed a Marvel role! For updates on the latest X-Men films and series, take a look at TopMob’s listings.
