CZ does not want to be Binance CEO but would not mind a pardon from Trump

As an analyst with years of experience in the cryptocurrency market, I find Changpeng ‘CZ’ Zhao’s recent statements intriguing. His decision to step down as CEO of Binance yet expressing a desire for a presidential pardon is a fascinating dichotomy.

Changpeng ‘CZ’ Zhao reveals he has no desire to serve as Binance CEO again, but admits he ‘definitely wouldn’t mind’ receiving a pardon from Donald Trump.

On December 2nd, Changpeng ‘CZ’ Zhao, the former CEO of Binance (BNB), responded to a post by John Lilic, Executive Director at Telos Foundation. Lilic had mentioned CZ in his post and proposed that President-elect Donald Trump might consider granting a pardon to CZ due to his previous criminal charges which resulted in him serving a four-month prison sentence.

In a recent post, Lilic suggested that President Trump might want to consider granting a pardon to CZ of Binance, allowing him to resume his role as CEO at Binance and contribute further to the growth and full realization of the cryptocurrency industry. Lilic also noted that CZ is a casualty in the ongoing legal battles.

In response to Lilic’s post, CZ made it clear that he doesn’t aspire to reclaim the CEO position at Binance. Yet, he didn’t express any objections to being granted a pardon by President Trump.

“No wish to be CEO again. But definitely wouldn’t mind a pardon,” said CZ.

Beneath the exchange between the Telos executive and the previous Binance CEO, there was a strong showing of backing for CZ, with numerous users expressing “Let CZ go free.” Many users expressed their belief that the former CEO could bring significant benefits to the cryptocurrency community, whether by reclaiming his position as CEO at Binance or by joining the government.

One user asserted, “Indeed, CZ is certainly a fitting choice for a role in government, as they can help facilitate widespread crypto usage.

“Not working as CEO of Binance but working as a CEO of crypto,” said another user.

As a seasoned crypto investor, I can share some clarity following a public interview given by CZ post his release from prison. Contrary to rumors circulating, he clarified that there’s no such thing as a “lifetime ban” for him in managing crypto exchanges according to the terms of his plea agreement with the government. He asserted that those exact words are not included in the agreement.

Nevertheless, CZ clearly stated that given the opportunity, he would not resume his role as Binance CEO. Rather, he prefers to invest his time in supporting and funding budding entrepreneurs who aspire to launch innovative cryptocurrency projects.

In November 2023, CZ admitted guilt in relation to business activities. These activities involved handling transactions for nations subjected to U.S. restrictions, specifically Iran and Cuba. The main accusations primarily revolved around money laundering offenses.

In accordance with his agreement with the U.S. authorities, Binance was required to pay a penalty worth $4.3 billion. Simultaneously, Zhao personally paid a fine amounting to $50 million and chose to relinquish his position as CEO of Binance. However, he retains shareholder privileges in the crypto exchange.
