Dabba Cartel: Anjali Anand reacts to ‘plus-sized’ label; questions why Govinda, Rishi Kapoor were never called that

On February 28, Netflix debuted the crime-thriller show “Dabba Cartel,” starring Shabana Azmi. Prior to its release, fans were eager due to an intriguing preview. The series boasts Anjali Anand in a substantial role and presents a compelling storyline. Lately, Anjali has spoken out against being stereotyped as ‘plus-sized.’ She questioned why actors like Govinda and Rishi Kapoor, who are male, were never subjected to the same labeling.

During an interview on Fever FM, Anjali Anand expressed her views about the prejudices prevalent within the film industry, noting that despite her achievements on digital platforms, she hasn’t been offered a leading role in mainstream movies.

She stated, “No one ever questioned if Govinda and Hrithik Roshan, who had distinct appearances but whom I adore, with Govinda perhaps being my favorite. Yet, neither of them was labeled a plus-size actor. Rishi Kapoor wasn’t either; he is simply an actor. However, for women like me, the label ‘plus sized’ actor is often applied.

As a lifestyle expert speaking from personal experience, I’ve often found myself grappling with the endless discourse surrounding body size. Instead of fueling this conversation, I strive to normalize diverse body types in our society. While I understand that promoting plus-size representation could potentially yield financial gains, I choose not to engage in it. For me, there’s no difference between my body type and anyone else’s – we’re all just individuals living our lives.

Anjali drew attention to the inconsistencies in the entertainment industry regarding female representation. Specifically, she noted that movies such as Chandni showcased male actors of varying physiques who faced no criticism about their appearance, simply due to being male.

Yet, when a woman takes on a part similar to Vidya Balan in The Dirty Picture, it’s often her physical appearance that grabs attention instead of her acting skills. This led her to wonder why male actors never receive the label ‘plus-sized’, whereas women face such persistent scrutiny regarding their bodies.

In addition, Dabba Cartel, helmed by director Hitesh Bhatia, features an impressive ensemble of actors such as Shabana Azmi, Jyotika, Anjali Anand, Shalini Pandey, Gajraj Rao, and Sai Tamhankar. This Netflix series is produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani under Excel Entertainment, with Shibani Akhtar, Vishnu Menon, Gaurav Kapur, and Akanksha Seda serving as its creators.
