Shabana Azmi, renowned as a legend, has spent several decades contributing to India’s film industry. Her debut role showcased her acting talent, earning her a National Award. Even after appearing in nearly 160 films and series, the actress is eager to delve into portraying historical figures.
In a recent chat with TopMob, the leading ladies from Netflix’s Dabba Cartel show shared their thoughts. During this conversation, the esteemed actress Shabana Azmi from Bollywood was asked about what still ignites her passion as an actor after decades in the Indian film industry. Renowned for her quick wit and humor, she playfully mentioned that money is the primary driving force and the sole thing that continues to excite her.
Yet, she promptly elaborated by saying that there’s much more to it than what meets the eye. As portrayed in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, she expressed her interest in playing a historical character because she feels that for better understanding, we primarily rely on our movies.

Drawing from personal experience, she elaborated, “Given our scant historical references, it has become customary among us to discuss such topics in a certain manner. What I’m curious about is if these figures could converse as we do.
During the same interview, Azmi expressed her views on filmmaker Zoya Akhtar, stating that she prefers not to be labeled as a woman director. Furthermore, the actress of Neerja added her thoughts regarding projects being categorized as ‘female-focused’.
She expressed her thought, “I ponder if you’ve noticed this. It’s because women often face a lack of exposure, yet they are the ones directing and starring in this production… I believe it’s crucial to highlight this for the viewers. Eventually, I hope we’ll reach a point where it’s just the norm, but for now, we’re working towards becoming more noticeable.
