As a die-hard SNL fan with over three decades of comedy under my belt, I can confidently say that Dana Carvey’s impromptu performance as a 100-year-old Jennifer Coolidge was nothing short of genius!
Dana Carvey shares the story behind his portrayal of a 100-year-old version of Jennifer Coolidge during a recent Saturday Night Live skit.
The comedian, who started playing Joe Biden in season 50 of the NBC comedy show about a month ago, mentioned during a recent episode of Superfly, a spinoff from his and David Spade’s podcast Fly on the Wall, that he often learns his impression of the well-known actress at the last minute.
On Thursday night, someone tossed it at me,” Carvey, former cast member of SNL from 1986 to 1993, stated. “They informed me that the character was akin to a Snow White-like figure, with Jennifer Coolidge being trapped in a mirror for hundreds of years.
In the drawing labeled “Maybelline”, Chloe Fineman’s character portraying Jennifer Coolidge is depicted receiving assistance from a mirror reflection of Jennifer Coolidge, enacted by host Ariana Grande, as she applies “Maybelline Super Stay Long Wear Liquid Lip Color”. Later, after Fineman asks, “I wonder what our lips look like from the side?”, a third Jennifer Coolidge (played by Carvey) appears in another mirror.
“Thank God you opened the mirror,” Carvey said. “I’ve been trapped in here for years!”
In the podcast, I found myself listening to a comedian describe a sketch as having a “quirkily intellectual vibe.” He went on to say, “It was a bit head-scratching for me, but I sure did enjoy it!
In my own words as a fan, I’d say: “During our conversation, he mentioned that due to timing constraints, they had to cut approximately four beats from the dress rehearsal to the live show. One of these cuts was a rather unexpected one – it involved us discussing eating corn. It was quite wild and fascinating. It was like an unrelated comment such as, ‘Hey. Wow. Let’s eat some corn,’ in his Coolidge voice. Suddenly, there were mentions of corn on stage. ‘May I have your corn?’
Carvey additionally showed a recording (down below), which Jon Lovitz, his ex-SNL colleague, had captured backstage, of him practicing his lines for the Jennifer Coolidge skit, to Spade.
