As a lifelong Marvel fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the intricate tapestry of stories spun by the MCU, I must say that the domino art stunt celebrating the arrival of ‘What If…?’ Season 3 is nothing short of mesmerizing. The attention to detail and the sheer scale of this project are a testament to the dedication of artist Lily Hevesh, who has truly outdone herself with this masterpiece.
The third and concluding season of “What If…?” marks the last Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) production prior to the slated 2025 debut of various Marvel TV series. This season promises a multiverse-wide turmoil, with fresh episodes being released daily during the year’s largest holiday week, exclusively for Disney+ subscribers. Interestingly, an exciting visual spectacle that surfaced online on the same day as Season 3 premiere is not from the animated series itself, but rather a remarkable domino art setup commemorating the show’s arrival.
Without a doubt, this art exhibit truly shines, whether you observe it before or after its fascinating, minutes-long collapse sequence. It was no easy feat setting up all these dominoes, a task masterfully accomplished by artist Lily Hevesh, better known as Hevesh5 online. Let’s delve into her story later, but for now, relax and prepare yourself for the surges of delight as you witness 15,000 dominoes tumbling gracefully, with Marvel references sprinkled throughout for added enjoyment.
Spending countless hours watching intricate domino sequences topple over is incredibly relaxing for me, lowering my blood pressure significantly. It’d be fantastic if streaming platforms like Pluto TV or Tubi could swiftly introduce a ‘Domino Art’ channel to cater to viewers like myself.
In terms of fun visual connections, the domino track boasts artwork inspired by the animated series “What If…?“, and moreover, it harmoniously colors its pieces according to the characters depicted, initiating with Xu Shang-Chi and Kate Bishop who will make their appearance in Episode 6 titled “What If…1872?” Scheduled for airing on December 27, both Simu Liu and Hailee Steinfeld reprise their roles from the original series.
That bit leads into a section where Thor’s…ahem…where Mjolnir ziplines down to a spot where a Storm figure is near yellow and black dominoes, which sets up an even bigger version of Mjolnir smashing a lightning bolt display. Which is a reference both to one of the mutant’s classic costume color pairings as well as to the Season 3 episode “What If…The Watcher Disappeared?” in which X-Men ‘97’s Alison Sealy-Smith will once again voice Ororo Munroe, this time as the hammer-wielding Goddess of Thunder.
One of the things I’m particularly fond of that has developed over the past few years, according to Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum, is an animated Marvel character he can’t wait to introduce into the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In this, various scenes involving Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier, Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness (surrounded by musical symbols), Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, and The Watcher himself are displayed. If only Jeffrey Wright had provided the narration, it might have made this video even more relaxing to watch.
Instead of me geeking out about finding details in the video, fans can enjoy the behind-the-scenes video shared by Lily Hevesh, which offers glimpses into her nine-day journey creating that impressive artwork. Give it a watch!
Could it be that “What If…?”, entering its third season, might establish plotlines paving the way for Marvel’s future blockbuster productions, potentially offering hints about the eagerly awaited “Avengers: Doomsday”? As we eagerly anticipate each new episode leading up to the finale, which is expected to be a significant turning point, set to premiere on Disney+ on December 29.
