As a cinephile with a penchant for both classic and contemporary cinema, I find myself utterly thrilled by the news of Daniel Craig‘s upcoming role in Luca Guadagnino’s film, “Queer.” Having grown up watching Craig as James Bond, it will be fascinating to see him step out of his iconic tuxedo and into a completely different character.

Viewers are on the verge of witnessing Daniel Craig as James Bond like never before, in his upcoming film directed by Luca Guadagnino, known for “Call Me By Your Name.” Titled “Queer,” details about this project continue to surface. The movie has now been acquired for distribution in the U.S. by A24, a renowned studio that produced critically acclaimed films such as “Moonlight” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” According to Deadline, the next film starring former 007 Daniel Craig, “Queer,” has secured U.S. distribution through indie studio A24, with a newly released image depicting an emotional Craig seeking comfort from co-star Drew Starkey. Guadagnino’s next movie, titled “Queer,” comes after the success of his highest-earning film, “Challengers.” This film grossed $50.1 million in the U.S. and $94.2 million globally. In “Queer,” set in the 1950s, Craig portrays William Lee, an American living abroad who falls for a younger man named Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey), a student who offers him a profound emotional bond. The cast also includes Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Henry Zaga, Drew Droege, and Ariel Schulman.

A24 Was Always Expected to Pick up the Provocative Project

The movie “Queer” is adapted from a novel by William S. Burroughs, originally penned in the early 1950s but not published until 1985. Burroughs, renowned Beat Generation author of works such as “Junkie,” “Naked Lunch,” and “The Soft Machine,” is often thought to write novels that are difficult to adapt for screen. David Cronenberg attempted this with his film adaptation of “Naked Lunch,” shifting the narrative to make it more a biographical piece about Burroughs than an accurate adaptation. Unlike some of Burroughs’ other works, “Queer” is considered one of his most straightforward novels, telling a simple tale of a man’s drug and sex-fueled escapades in Mexico City.

Due to its unique theme, it was widely anticipated that A24 would acquire the rights to distribute the movie, given their expertise in handling provocative subject matter related to the LGBTQ+ community. The momentum grew when the project was presented to potential distributors by CAA Media Finance in June, and eventually, A24 secured the distribution deal. The film is currently competing for the Golden Lion at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, which is ongoing, and it will have its American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In a sense, Guadagnino’s latest movie could be seen as a revisiting of his distinctive style, reminiscent of films like “Bones and All” and “Call Me By Your Name.” The visual and narrative elements of the film, titled “Queer,” seem to echo those found in his Oscar-nominated work, “Call Me By Your Name.” Interestingly, despite being set in Mexico City, Guadagnino filmed the project in Rome, Italy. He opted to recreate the Mexican City locations within this Italian setting instead. The director is also rejoining forces with screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes, who was instrumental in crafting this year’s “Challengers” script as well.

After completing his final James Bond film, “No Time to Die” in 2021 and playing Detective Benoit Blanc in the 2022 movie “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”, Daniel Craig’s next big venture will be the third mystery he solves as this character in a production called “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery“, which is scheduled for release on Netflix in 2025.
