Director Luca Guadagnino and star Daniel Craig’s movie titled Queer has secured a streaming platform and release date. This film is an adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ 1985 novella with the same name, where Craig portrays a fictionalized Burroughs character who falls in love with Eugene Allerton (played by Drew Starkey), a significantly younger man. Queer received favorable reviews and was ranked among the Top 10 films of 2024 by the National Board of Review. Craig’s performance earned him numerous nominations, including for The Golden Globes, the Critics’ Choice Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
1950: William Lee, an American living in Mexico City, spends most of his days in solitude, interacting only occasionally with other American residents. However, his chance meeting with Eugene Allerton, a newcomer and former soldier, gives him hope for the first time that he might form a close bond with someone.
Although Queer received favorable feedback from critics, particularly for Craig’s performance, and Guadagnino’s other 2024 film, Challengers, both were overlooked at the 97th Academy Awards. Additionally, Queer failed to meet expectations at the box office, earning just $4 million globally against an estimated budget of $50 million. Given that it was not nominated for any significant Oscars, A24 has no immediate plans to release Queer before the awards ceremony; instead, they are aiming for a date approximately a month after the Academy Awards.
Max Is a Must-Have Streaming Service
Due to Max striking a streaming agreement with A24, the service has emerged as a must-have streaming destination for movie enthusiasts. The critically acclaimed animated film “Flow,” which clinched the Golden Globe for Best Animated Film this year, had a strong streaming debut, and similar success may be in store for “Queer.” Alongside movies like “Juror #2,” A24’s romantic drama “We Live in Time,” the horror-comedy “Your Monsters,” and now “Queer,” Max and the cable network HBO are offering a fantastic lineup of underrated titles to watch in 2024 that might have gone unnoticed.
Max, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery, is considering adding “Queer” to their service, as both its director and lead actor might be involved in a significant DC project. Reportedly, Director Luca Guadagnino is discussing the directing role for “Sgt. Rock,” a series based on a WWII DC Comics character who has been featured in Max’s animated show “Creature Commandos.” It’s said that Daniel Craig could potentially play Sgt. Rock, which would be part of James Gunn’s DC Universe. Given that Guadagnino and Craig seem poised to join the DC Universe, it might stir up comic book enthusiasts to check out their previous project, “Queer,” on the service.
