Daniel Kaluuya's Get Out Character Is Getting Statue in London

As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of cinematic brilliance over the years, I find it incredibly heartwarming and inspiring to see Daniel Kaluuya receive such a well-deserved honor. His statue in London’s Leicester Square is not just a tribute to his exceptional talent, but also a testament to the power of storytelling and its ability to resonate with millions worldwide.

This month, a statue honoring the acclaimed British actor will be unveiled in his birthplace, London. The monument recognizes his significant achievements in cinema and the arts. Remarkably, this event aligns with both Halloween and the UK’s Black History Month celebrations.

According to Entertainment Weekly’s report, a statue will be erected in Central London’s Leicester Square, depicting Daniel Kaluuya’s character Chris Washington from Jordan Peele’s hit horror film, Get Out. This statue is part of the Scenes in the Square trail, which honors significant moments in British cinema history. The choice was made after a poll of 5,000 British film fans chose Kaluuya as their preferred movie star to be recognized in this way. Overjoyed by the news, Kaluuya shared an image of his iconic “Sunken Place” scene on Instagram, accompanied by a caption expressing his excitement.

“Soooo wanted to tell you guys, I’m getting a statue in Leicester Square, Central London, the same place I used to eat my meal deal prawn cocktail crisps, in between auditions. I’ll be real, this is beyond imagining. “Chris” in Get Out will be memorialised on the trail alongside characters like Batman, Harry Potter and Mary Poppins and the most special thing about all of this is that it’s been chosen by the people. I want to say thank you all for taking the time to vote for me. I really tell stories for you guys; whether you’re in a bouji cinema, snuck into a 2nd screening or just wanna watch something Friday eve after work, I really make things with you in mind. So to have this by you, means a lot to me.”

Kaluuya’s Statute Will Be Interactive

Kaluuya is renowned for his exceptional roles in critically acclaimed movies such as Black Panther, Judas and the Black Messiah, and Nope. He achieved international fame with his breakthrough performance in Get Out. His likeness will be immortalized in a permanent tribute to the film’s cultural impact, which delivers a biting satire on American racism. Scenes in the Square is a trail of interactive statues that debuted in 2020, showcasing Britain’s adoration for cinema and featuring iconic characters spanning the last century in the heart of London’s film district. The exhibit includes an audio tour to guide visitors through the exhibits, providing insight into each statue.

In 2021, Daniel Kaluuya won an Oscar for his performance in “Judas and the Black Messiah” and teamed up with Jordan Peele again in 2022 for the highly praised UFO thriller “Nope”. Notably, Peele became the first Black screenwriter to win an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay with “Get Out”, propelling both their careers. Daniel Kaluuya’s Oscar statue will be revealed in October, joining other life-sized figures like Wonder Woman, Indiana Jones, Laurel and Hardy, Gene Kelly, Bugs Bunny, Mary Poppins, Charlie Chaplin, Mr. Bean, the Game of Thrones iron throne, and more. Mark Williams, deputy chief executive for Heart of London Business Alliance, shared with Variety that they are thrilled to include “Get Out” in their Scenes in the Square lineup, as it represents a contemporary cinematic triumph and British talent at its finest.

Currently, Daniel Kaluuya is involved in the creation of a fresh Barney movie, inspired by the popular purple dinosaur character from the 90s TV series “Barney & Friends”. He will work alongside Mattel Films to co-produce this film. Notably, Mattel Films mentioned that the project aims at an adult audience. Kevin McKeon, an executive from Mattel, referred to it as a film with the style of A24 productions.
