Danny Trejo Talks Machete Kills in Space & Wants to Take Elon Musk with Him

As a lifelong movie enthusiast who has had the pleasure of witnessing some truly iconic performances, I must say that Danny Trejo stands out as one of the most captivating and versatile actors in Hollywood today. His career spans decades, and his collaboration with Robert Rodriguez has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on cinema history.

Leading up to the launch of “Seven Cemeteries,” we had a chat with actor Danny Trejo. This is his latest Western comedy, where you’ll find familiar faces like Efren Ramirez from “Napoleon Dynamite” and Maria Canals-Barrera from “Wizards of Waverly Place.” It’s an unpredictable, otherworldly journey as Trejo’s main character, Bruno, leads a motley crew of undead outlaws towards redemption. The film is perfectly suited for someone like Trejo, who gained fame for his remarkable partnership with director Robert Rodriguez, notably playing the title role in Rodriguez’s cult hit “Machete” franchise. Since the movie was released after its teaser during “Grindhouse” (2007), fans have been eagerly waiting for another “Machete” installment.

There have been discussions about a possible sequel called “Machete Kills in Space“, and Trejo expressed to MovieWeb that he’s still keen on the concept. He recently said, “I need to convince Robert [Rodriguez] to make Machete Kills in Space. I’d love to have Elon Musk join me!” Rodriguez made Trejo a global star with movies like “Spy Kids“, “Desperado“, and “From Dusk Till Dawn“. Together, they’ve worked on approximately 13 films.

If fans are curious about the reason behind the numerous Hollywood collaborations in their partnership, it might be due to a familial bond. As Trejo put it, “We’re second cousins,” he explained. “When Rodriguez cast me in Desperado, we weren’t aware of our family connection yet. Then, when I arrived in Acuna, Mexico, my family from San Antonio visited me. My uncle Rudy, who knows San Antonio well, spotted Rodriguez and said, ‘Who’s that?’ He called him over and introduced them as cousins. It turned out we were second cousins. [I asked], ‘Alright Robert, what’s next for us after this project?’

Discussing the iconic figure Machete, it’s likely that Los Angeles residents are familiar with the fact that the venerable actor, who appears to be in his 80s but seems more fit and youthful than many people in their 50s, has a chain of Trejo’s Tacos restaurants in the city – one of the menu items being “The Machete.” He shared with us that he visits at least one of these locations once a week, and his Instagram page hints that he even cooks there himself.

Apart from his acting roles in live-action films, Trejo has also provided voiceovers for numerous animated projects. We wondered if he felt there should be a specific Oscar category for Best Voice Actor. “I believe they should honor everything with an Oscar,” he chuckled, “I appreciate the work… However, if I were doing it solely for an award, I think I’d feel let down, you understand?

In the future, it appears that actor Trejo has approximately 25 upcoming, as-yet-unreleased projects lined up, according to IMDb. He shared with us his enthusiasm for one specific project.

We have an upcoming production titled “1521“, which delves into the period when the Spanish were attempting to conquer the Philippines, and I’m playing the role of Magellan. It’s quite interesting because you get to research Magellan’s mannerisms… He has a very distinctive Hispanic flair.

Based on Trejo’s preference, it’s likely we’ll also enjoy it. Meanwhile, the film “Seven Cemeteries” from Quiver Distribution will be available in theaters, on demand, and digitally starting October 11, 2024.
