Daredevil: Born Again’s Creator Clarifies MCU Canon For Charlie Cox’s Superhero, And I’m Not Surprised By One Moment He’s Avoiding

After the debut of “Agatha All Along” last autumn, coming up next in the lineup of live-action Marvel TV series is “Daredevil: Born Again”, set for release in March. This is a continuation of the Netflix “Daredevil” series which originally aired from 2015 to 2018. Unlike many projects within this franchise, “Born Again” is more self-contained, but we’ve seen Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock appearing in various places recently. The showrunner and co-creator of “Born Again”, Dario Scardapane, has now explained how the series will deal with Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) continuity for its main character, and this includes one instance that is being sidestepped, which isn’t surprising.

Approaching the final stretch before “Daredevil: Born Again” hits Disney+ in late 2025, showrunner Scardapane, who joined during creative revisions, shared insights about the challenge of aligning his series with the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) narrative. In his own words:

In Marvel’s grand scheme, every action has a consequence. Often, I would present ideas early on, only to learn that they had different strategies in mind. Until the major Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) plan unfolds, there’s some flexibility. To maintain focus, I tend to disregard certain elements from the broader universe. We meticulously craft Daredevil, focusing on his personal struggles, design details like his suit, and where we find him in his life. So, it’s accurate to say that Daredevil is part of the MCU canon. However, some events involving characters like Spider-Man or She-Hulk are acknowledged, but not emphasized, and the one-night stand with She-Hulk might fall into this category.

It’s clear to me why the upcoming series “Daredevil: Born Again” might choose to avoid depicting a romantic relationship between Matt Murdock and Jennifer Walters, aka She-Hulk, given the significant differences in tone – with “Born Again” being a dark, gritty crime drama and “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” being a humorous legal comedy that breaks the fourth wall. However, I’m not thrilled about the possibility of Jennifer being overlooked in Matt’s romantic storyline. She deserves more recognition in his love life!

Dario Scardapane accepts that Matt and Jennifer were a couple in the past, but it seems they won’t be a focus point. I’m okay with this choice over time, although I wish they might reunite eventually. As for Matt’s appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, I understand why it won’t be mentioned, yet I hope there could be a future where he and Tom Holland’s Peter Parker join forces to battle crime together. Since they both protect the same city, their paths should intersect eventually.

In the highly anticipated series “Daredevil: Born Again,” which premieres on March 4, we can expect Matt Murdock, the MCU’s version of Daredevil, to interact with several characters from his Netflix days. These include Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, who has been featured in shows like “Hawkeye” and “Echo,” where Charlie Cox also made a brief appearance. Other familiar faces include Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, and Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/Punisher. The first season consists of nine episodes, and production for the second season is set to begin shortly.
