Daredevil: Born Again’s EP Finally Opened Up About Having To Make A Case To Bring Back Karen And Foggy (And I’m So Glad He Did)

In 2025, when the long-awaited Marvel show Daredevil: Born Again finally graces our TV screens, it will reunite two characters who haven’t shared the limelight for almost seven years. These aren’t Matt Murdock or Wilson Fisk, as both their portrayers, Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio, have already made comebacks in different series. Instead, we’re referring to Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson, who are set to reappear as Karen Page, Matt Murdock’s legal partner, and “Foggy” Nelson, his friend and law partner respectively.

It wasn’t surprising that fans felt disappointed when they found out that the initial storyline of Daredevil: Born Again wouldn’t bring back familiar characters for their official Marvel Cinematic Universe debuts. However, fortunately, this decision was overturned following some changes behind the scenes, which took place during the 2023 Hollywood strikes. As Dario Scardapane, the showrunner, explained in an interview with Empire, reinstating Woll and Henson was a top priority for him. In his own words:

One of my initial remarks to the higher-ups was that Karen and Foggy are essential for this production. They’re Matt’s family, the core of his life. If you plan to exclude them, it’s crucial to provide a reason that makes sense. Otherwise, it would be inappropriate to remove them from the picture.

Despite Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson appearing alongside Charlie Cox extensively throughout the three seasons of Daredevil prior to the MCU, it’s surprising that the original creative team decided not to reprise their roles. Even though the initial plan for the Man Without Fear’s comeback didn’t involve Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, former writer/producer Dario Scardapane quickly confirmed that the beloved character would return too.

Following the confirmation that Karen and Foggy would be rejoining the cast, Charlie Cox shared his sadness over their initial absence during filming. However, for Scardapane, their participation was a crucial factor in deciding whether or not to join the project. In his own words:

“Their involvement was the line that determined my decision on whether or not to sign on.

I was prepared to forfeit my job due to this particular issue, as the finale of Season 3 from the Netflix series left us with a vivid dream and the cryptic names on a napkin. If you don’t address that debt, you’re depriving your characters of necessary background. Overlooking that dream isn’t an option.

Scardapane is discussing the last episode from the original season of Daredevil, where Matt, Foggy, and Karen decided to strengthen their relationships and grow the two-part law firm into Nelson, Murdock, and Page. Ignoring this significant ending would have been disrespectful to fans, considering how important it was for them. This is even more relevant now that Deborah Ann Woll has mentioned facing difficulty in finding acting roles following Daredevil’s cancellation on Netflix.

Initially, Ayelet Zurer played Vanessa Fisk in Netflix’s series, but Sandrine Holt took over her role during the rewrites. However, later it was decided that Zurer should return to the show instead. Wilson Bethel is set to reappear as Benjamin Poindexter, who might adopt the villainous identity of Bullseye in the future. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet on whether a new Elektra character will make an appearance.

Fans of “Daredevil: Born Again” won’t have to wait much longer as it’s set to premiere soon, exclusively on Disney+ starting from next Tuesday, March 4th.
