Charlie Cox is primarily recognized for portraying Matt Murdock, the blind crime-fighter patrolling the gritty streets of New York City (not the Gordon Ramsay restaurant) as Daredevil, in the popular series called Daredevil. Now, Cox will reprise his role as Daredevil, this time with a solo series within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, when Daredevil: Born Again debuts next March. However, prior to donning Murdock’s red suit, Cox was widely recognized for spearheading an acclaimed adaptation of a cherished fantasy tale. The movie Stardust, based on the novel by Neil Gaiman, boasted a stellar ensemble cast, with Cox at its forefront, and it has found a new home on streaming platforms.
Currently streaming on Paramount+ is the 2007 fantasy romance film titled “Stardust,” directed by Matthew Vaughn. The story revolves around Tristan (played by Charlie Cox), who promises to win back his love, Victoria (Sienna Miller), by retrieving a fallen star from the enchanting realm of Stormhold. Known for its whimsicality and distinctly British wit, “Stardust” boasts an impressive ensemble cast that includes Claire Danes, Henry Cavill, Michelle Pfeiffer, Kate Magowan, Ben Barnes, Mark Strong, Robert De Niro, Rupert Everett, Mark Heap, Ricky Gervais, and David Kelly. The legendary Ian McKellen provides the narration for this captivating cinematic adventure.
The film “Stardust” garnered favorable responses upon its release. Currently, it holds a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes among critics, but an even more impressive 86% score from the audience. Notably, esteemed critic Roger Ebert rated it 2.5 out of 4 in his 2007 review, stating that while the movie was not dull, it was instead overcrowded and lacked clear focus. He further explained:
Some stories draw you in and keep you captivated, while others feel like one event after another. Stardust is enjoyable initially, but it fails the Derek Malcolm Test, which states that a fantastic film is one I can’t imagine not wanting to watch again.
Charlie Cox Returns as Daredevil in the MCU
Following his role in “Stardust”, Charlie Cox took a while to solidify himself as a leading actor once more. He appeared in various projects, ranging from an episode of “Downton Abbey” to “Boardwalk Empire”. However, when he debuted as Matt Murdock on the 2015 Netflix series “Daredevil”, Cox regained his prominence. In a rapidly evolving genre, “Daredevil” is undeniably one of (if not THE) finest superhero TV shows ever produced. The show’s conclusion in 2019 after three seasons left fans eager for Cox’s return, and hopefully within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The wish came true as Cox appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which received an overwhelmingly positive fan reaction. As a result, Daredevil: Born Again was swiftly given the green light, with Cox and several of his previous cast members, including Deborah Ann Woll, Vincent D’Onofrio, Elden Henson, and Jon Bernthal, all signing up for the new series. A fresh trailer for Born Again is due out soon, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the release date of the show.
