‘Dark Winds’ Grabs Early Season 4 Renewal at AMC

AMC is getting an early start on the future of its drama series Dark Winds.

The show based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee book series has been given the green light for a fourth season. This decision was made just over two weeks prior to the March 9 launch of season three on both AMC television and streaming platform AMC+.

Just like the upcoming third part, the fourth season of Dark Winds will consist of eight episodes instead of six per season as seen in the previous two seasons. Filming is set to start in March, and notable star and executive producer Zahn McClarnon will step behind the camera for the first time to direct one of the episodes.

As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “When we gave the green light to the first season of Dark Winds, we saw its potential to become an authentic and lasting franchise alongside our beloved projects such as The Walking Dead and Anne Rice. And that’s exactly what this talented cast and creative team delivered! From Tony Hillerman’s timeless novels, guided by a star-studded producing team including Robert Redford, George R.R. Martin, Chris Eyre, and our showrunner John Wirth, and led by the exceptional Zahn McClarnon and the rest of the cast, this series has captured the hearts of fans on AMC/AMC+, even reaching the top 10 shows on Netflix for a month last fall. I can’t wait to see what more exciting stories lie ahead in these upcoming third and fourth seasons!

As a devoted fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the third season of Dark Winds, which continues six months after the events of the previous season. In this new chapter, Lt. Joe Leaphorn (McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) delve into the mystery of two missing boys, their only trace being an abandoned bicycle and a blood-stained patch of ground. Meanwhile, Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) struggles to adapt 500 miles from home with the Border Patrol, yet finds herself uncovering a sinister web of human and drug smuggling. The stellar cast includes Jenna Elfman, Bruce Greenwood, Raoul Max Trujillo, Tonantzin Carmelo, Alex Meraz, Terry Serpico, Derek Hinkey, Phil Burke, and Christopher Heyerdahl as guests, while A Martinez and Jeri Ryan reprise their previous roles. I can’t wait to see where this gripping tale unfolds!

McClarnon expressed his eagerness to delve into the role of Joe Leaphorn once more in season four and his excitement for his directorial debut on a series that holds great significance for him. He also extended his gratitude and appreciation to Kristin Dolan, Dan McDermott, and everyone at AMC Networks for their backing and dedication to Dark Winds. Lastly, he’s particularly delighted to be working alongside this fantastic cast and crew, whom he has grown fond of.

Showrunner Wirth commented, “Kristin Dolan, Dan McDermott, and the entire team at AMC Networks have been incredibly supportive of our small production. Our talented writers, outstanding cast, and hardworking crew are all thrilled and energized by the prospect of delving deeper into the world of Dark Winds in a fourth season.

The show is produced by executive producer Wirth, along with its creator Graham Roland, McClarnon, Robert Redford, George R.R. Martin, Chris Eyre, Tina Elmo, Jim Chory, Vince Gerardis, and Anne Hillerman. In simpler terms, these individuals are responsible for the production of this series, with Wirth serving as the executive producer, Graham Roland as the creator, and the others contributing in various roles.
