‘Dark Winds’ Season 4 Confirmed with Legendary Cameos Returning

In a new twist, AMC’s acclaimed series “Dark Winds” made its comeback for Season 3, and it didn’t disappoint with two unexpected and iconic guest appearances. This captivating show currently enjoys a perfect 100% from critics and a solid 70% approval rating among audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Notably, George R.R. Martin, renowned for his work on “Game of Thrones,” and Robert Redford, famous for films like “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “The Natural,” serve as executive producers, and they both made brief appearances in the premiere episode of this season.

In the middle of the episode, Lt. Joe Leaphorn (played by Zahn McClarnon) visits two inmates, and it turns out to be none other than Martin and Redford engaged in a game of chess. Redford seemed agitated as Martin deliberated over his next move, and when Leaphorn offered advice, it helped Martin to checkmate Redford. This scene was both unexpected and amusing, particularly when Redford exclaimed, “George, the world is on hold. Make a move!” This line is subtly hinting at Martin, who hasn’t yet completed his long-awaited book, Game of Thrones: The Winds of Winter.

The series “Dark Winds” was developed by Graham Roland (known for his work on Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) and is adapted from the book series about Navajo police officers titled Leaphorn and Chee, written by Tony Hillerman. This show takes place in the early 1970s in the Southwestern region surrounding the Four Corners, where New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado intersect. In this production, Kiowa Gordon portrays Jim Chee, while Jessica Matten plays Bernadette Manuelito, a Navajo tribal police sergeant. Throughout the series, they work together to solve crimes in the area, with each season drawing inspiration from a particular novel in the series, as well as incorporating elements of another.

The TV series initially aired in June 2022, amassing 2.2 million viewers in Live+3 ratings. When Season 2 debuted in 2023, it drew 1.7 million viewers under the same metric. The first season was loosely inspired by the 1978 novel “Listening Woman,” incorporating aspects of “People of Darkness” from 1980. For the second season, they delved deeper into the latter book, and the third season is set to follow plots from “Dance Hall of the Dead” (1973) and “The Sinister Pig” (2003).

Dark Winds’ Season 4 Gets the Greenlight

Following the premiere of Season 3 of “Dark Winds” on Sunday, March 9th, AMC has already approved a fourth season. The series, which features a main cast and writing team predominantly composed of Native Americans, will continue to be filmed in the Navajo Nation area around the Four Corners, with principal filming taking place in New Mexico.

McClaron is also an executive producer of the show and was excited for a fourth season, saying:

I can’t wait to delve back into the role of Joe Leaphorn for Season 4, and I’m thrilled to have my first directing experience with a series that holds such personal significance for me.

In contrast to Seasons 1 and 2 which had six episodes each, Season 3 of Dark Winds increased to eight. As for Season 4, we’re yet to know how many episodes it might have or when it will air, but the news that McClaron is stepping up his duties as a director behind the scenes is certainly intriguing.
