In the Star Wars saga, pivotal moments in Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader’s life are hard to miss. One of the earliest significant events is when Qui-Gon Jinn liberates him from slavery, setting him on a path towards Jedi training. Regrettably, Anakin succumbed to the Dark Side, transformed into Darth Vader, and served Emperor Palpatine for more than two decades. Despite his role as one of Star Wars’ most iconic villains, a recent comic offers us a reason to sympathize with Darth Vader, focusing on the character who once owned him, Watto the Toydarian.
In October, Marvel unveiled an ongoing comic book series titled “Star Wars: Legacy of Vader“. This series will delve into Kylo Ren’s storyline during the year between “The Last Jedi” and “The Rise of Skywalker“, focusing on his lasting bond with Darth Vader, his grandfather. The first issue is set to release on February 5, but Senior Editor Mark Paniccia has revealed some artwork from Issue #2 on X. One of these panels captures a scene so valuable it’s worth more than Republic credits.
It’s clear from the conversation and the context that Darth Vader is attacking someone, even though he isn’t explicitly named as Watto. The dialogue suggests that Watto has returned and exacted revenge, which seems to be the victim being sliced by the red blade. Given his brutal treatment of Anakin Skywalker and Shmi Skywalker when they were his slaves, it’s not surprising that he met a violent end at the hands of someone who once wanted to free all slaves.

Exploring the Genesis of Darth Vader’s Stirring ‘Rogue One’ Moment: Unraveling the Tale of Its Initial Misstep and Transformation into a Masterpiece
In this analysis, we delve into the fascinating journey behind one of the most memorable scenes in ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’, featuring the iconic character Darth Vader. We’ll uncover the initial missteps that led to its creation being described as “wrong as wrong can be,” and how it was eventually transformed into a cinematic masterpiece.
The original conception of this scene, which culminates with Darth Vader’s fateful line “I am your father,” was fraught with issues. The actors portraying the characters involved found themselves struggling to deliver lines convincingly, and the overall execution lacked the necessary impact that such a pivotal moment required.
However, through meticulous refinement, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to the Star Wars legacy, the scene was reworked and elevated to its current status as one of the most iconic moments in film history. The end result is a powerful testament to the art of storytelling, showcasing how even the most challenging creative endeavors can be transformed into something truly extraordinary with dedication and perseverance.
During Kylo Ren’s trip to Tatooine accompanied by Vaneé, who was previously introduced in Rogue One as Vader’s attendant and now appears to have a droid body, it’s worth noting that Watto was last seen on screen during Attack of the Clones. At that time, Anakin maintained his composure when dealing with Watto, but considering Darth Vader’s temperament, it wouldn’t be surprising if he returned to Tatooine solely to seek revenge against or eliminate Watto.
In one of the stories in the “From a Certain Point of View” anthology focused on “A New Hope”, it’s hinted that Obi-Wan Kenobi was dealing with Watto years into his stay on Tatooine. This event could have occurred anytime from about half a decade after the Empire took power, up until just before “A New Hope”. Given Darth Vader’s subsequent actions, it seems more likely to me that this encounter took place closer to the start of the Empire’s reign rather than decades later.
