At the 2025 Grammy Awards held on Sunday, Dave Chappelle was awarded the Best Comedy Album for the third consecutive year in that category, making it his sixth win in total.
During the pre-telecast ceremony, The Recording Academy handed out the Comedy Album award for excellence in comedy music. However, Dave Chappelle was absent and did not receive the trophy in person at that time.
Dave Chappelle received an award for “The Dreamer,” his New Year’s Eve 2023 Netflix special on Netflix. This was his seventh hour-long show on the streaming platform, and it marked his first release since the highly controversial 2021 special titled “The Closer” where Chappelle faced criticism for making jokes about the transgender community.
In “The Dreamer,” Chappelle continued to criticize various underrepresented communities, such as trans individuals and those with disabilities, stating, “I enjoy taking cheap shots!” during the performance.
Chappelle’s victory surpassed Ricky Gervais’ “Armageddon”, Jim Gaffigan’s “The Prisoner”, Nikki Glaser’s “Someday You’ll Die” and Trevor Noah’s “Where Was I”. In simpler terms, Chappelle won more than Ricky Gervais, Jim Gaffigan, Nikki Glaser, and Trevor Noah did in their respective stand-up specials.
On Sunday night, it’s Noah once again hosting the main event, marking his fifth consecutive year as emcee for this ceremony. Among the early Grammy winners in 2025 were Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, who each claimed their first Grammys, and Beyoncé, who bagged her inaugural country Grammy. Following Chappelle’s victory, Jimmy Carter snatched the award for best audiobook, setting a new record in that category. The trophy was accepted by Jason Carter, grandson of the late Jimmy Carter, who passed away at 100 years old in December.
This year’s Grammys, happening for the 67th time, will be broadcast live on CBS this Sunday, beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern Time (5 p.m. Pacific Time), straight from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The initial part of the ceremony, which started at 12:30 p.m. Pacific Time, took place at the Peacock Theater and was streamed live on the Recording Academy’s YouTube channel.
