As a seasoned gamer and someone who has seen the music industry evolve over the years, I can’t help but be intrigued by Dave Free‘s unique approach to building pgLang with Kendrick Lamar. His no-nonsense attitude and startup mentality are refreshing in an industry often plagued by empty promises and excessive talk.
In an open discussion, Dave Free revealed the strategies behind pgLang’s achievement, a company he founded with Kendrick Lamar.
In an unusual conversation with Elephant, the executive shared their perspective on why their company’s “no-chatter” policy has led their artists to make significant strides in the industry. “We believe in treating our artists like fledgling businesses,” Free expressed. “We want them to have control over their personal brand, which essentially means they have control over themselves. You often hear people complaining about aspects of the business they dislike, but there aren’t many actively investing in their vision. We thought, ‘Instead of talking about what we want from the industry, let’s take action and make it happen.’ ” He added, “We don’t indulge in unnecessary chatter. Got no time for that.”
Free explained that when he and Dot come up with a new concept, they bring the entire pgLang team together to build a supportive framework around it. He noted, “We ensure it’s meaningful, influential, financially viable, thought-provoking, and storytelling in nature. Once established, we question, ‘Does it resonate with us?'”
As a gamer, I can explain it like this: “You know how in some games you keep finding weaknesses or exploits to take advantage of until there’s none left? That’s what we call ‘break and repeat.’ Once we’ve exhausted all possible ways to improve or optimize, then I feel confident enough to release it to the gaming community.”
